Arp / Sequencer with Multiple Out Ports? (Not just MIDI channels)
Pardon me if this already exists,
But let's say I want a sequencer / arpeggiator to control 4 hardware synths.
Assuming I have the appropriate interface for iPad (such as iConnectMidi4+),
which one of these apps will let me select a different PORT per sequence / arpeggiator track?
OR
Would it be iConnectMidi Port Manager's job to somehow assign things appropriately?
thanks y'all

Phaedra and steppolyarp can handle multiple midi channels, I believe...
Edit: Sorry I didn't quite answer your question. I need to revert to the other members...
Genome. @ci516
There are two aspects to this question.
All the above - and this unfortunately includes Genome - treat your entire MIDI network as a single cable, even if it spans multiple ports, and the only differentiation for routing is by Channel number. All synths see all MIDI but choose to play only those on the channels you configured the to recognize.
But that was not what was asked.
Depending on the sophistication of the various synths there may not be a solely MIDI channel solution to the routing issue. Some may not be gifted with channel selectivity, or you may be wanting to play more than 16 channels. The first - channel-challenged - might be solvable with MidiBridge so long as the synth in question at least permits input port selection, but other than that, or for >16 channels, the ability for the sequencer to target specific ports as well as channels per track is required.
There are not many MIDI sequencers with song length tracks (most are pattern based), and I have most of them, and so far only Cubasis has port selection on a per track basis. Of the pattern based ones, Little MIDI Machine is the only one I found that can independently select which port each of its two pattern generators will feed.
Add: synth needs working Virtual MIDI In for MidiBridge to be able to help.
Correct me if I'm wrong but..
Beatmaker 2 is a linear sequencer that will allow you to assign its midi tracks to whatever channel you wish. I.e. Track 1 sends on channel 1 and will play whatever virtual midi instrument 'listens' on that channel. But you can quickly change that channel to sent midi data to any of the 16 channels or all of them in omni mode. This way you can play the controlled synth with the bm2s onscreen keyboard should you wish.
Saying that bm2 is not the greatest option if you want analog style loop sequencing a la little midi machine. I personally found that a bit restrictive due to loop length.
Yes, but BM2 does not support port selection per track, only channel selection. All MIDI goes out to all enabled Out ports.
Ideally one should be able to configure how many Virtual MID Out ports a sequencer presents, and select them on a per track basis. Nobody dos that. At most they allow one to enable or disable the single VM Out. The only App I have with true multiple VM Out ports is TB MIDI Stuff. Not configurable, fixed at 4.
good replies
i basically want ipad to have 4 channels of arpeggiator going to 4 different hardware synths that have no MIDI thru. but even if i buy the iconnectmidi4+ if it ever comes out, not sure what app would let me do this...
or
the port manager app of iconnectmidi will allow all 4 physical din outputs to be seen as 1 port on the interface and i can just end up using MIDI channels 1-4?
it will probably show 4 ports and either you can select all four port simultaneously in the arp or you could use MidiBridge to distribute the arp from its Virtual MIDI Out. What 4 channel arp will you be using?
you could get to four synths much sooner - and cheaper - with a powered USB hub and four $6 HDE MIDI interfaces (from Amazon), total cost around $50. If you are already using a hub but not enough ports, MIDI will work through a chained secondary hub.
There are also midi thru boxes and patchbays that should be able to accomplish this around $50.
Do you want to have several midi "hardware" output ports? So one midi 16 channel stream split to 4?
If you have some soldering skills, this is a 1 to 6 splitter kit here:
https://www.tindie.com/products/hotchk155/midisplit-1-input-6-output-midi-splitter/
I've put together a couple of his kits, and are really good as far as kits go. It's about $30 US. I don't have this particular one, but will be getting it soon. This fills a niche for me as I usually only play on one master keyboard to different synths or modules (hardware) or use ipad or other daw for driving the same.
