Cheap simple midi generator au
What do people recommend as a cheap (or free!) au that generates a few notes on a loop?
I have xequence for proper stuff, so don’t really wanna spend more than a coupla quid. But sometimes I just need some notes so I can mess around with some fx.
Comments
Atom, Rozetta
Autony, tweakable, choose number of notes, degree of predictability (from 100% ‘reliable’ to as unreliable as you like) base note, scale, timing, transpose with rotary selectors, hit generate button, job done. If you like what it generates, Photon or Atom are great ways to capture the loop for transfer into a more powerful midi editor. If you don’t, just hit generate again. Rinse and repeat.
Autony, Cality
Stravinski: https://itunes.apple.com/app/id1229475383 FREE
Riffer: https://itunes.apple.com/app/id1435691909
StepBud? This can also generate cc values too to modulate the fx.

Thanks all
Not au, but Stravinski for free will do nicely for now. I want Rozeta and Atom of course but have spent far too much on apps recently! 💸
If you don’t have it... it’s fun, free, well done, AU, and universal

Oh yeah I forgot I had that! Will give it a go thanks
Cat walking across my KB!
Record it!
😉
Physicles is a great free AU app for this, as mentioned by @skiphunt
Riffer is my go-to app for quick loop sequencing, or for a bit more control, Steppolyarp.
Stravinski is cool though somewhat awkward sounding sometimes.
NODEBEAT is one you shouldn’t pass up and is far more melodic. Its initial setup is infinitely generative so if you want just one phrase you have to freeze the notes and pulse generators.
One of my favorite things to do is set the speed of travel for either the notes or pulses to slow and as they drift record the notes. It gives nice little variations to timing.
Don’t forget Xequence has its own generative capability.
I’m glad I read this thread! I added Stravinski and NodeBeat to my tools.
I have Xequence 2. Does it have this generative capability too?
Yes. It’s called Polyhymnia, and it’s available from the magic wand menu in the piano roll editor.
I keep forgetting about Nodebeat. Still regularly maintained and on the desktop too. Kind of underrated IMHO
Oh cool! Just found it. Thanks!
+1
Stravinski is worth checking out.
