Interesting developments for consumers and app devs AltStore (an Alternative appstore) doesn't need a jailbreak.

Wow!! Great news.
However there's one big difference compared to a jailbreak:
No unrestricted access to other app's files, one of the most often lamented missing features on iOS for the iPad.
Neat, but I wager Apple could/would easily kibosh it.
Can we sell unwanted apps there?
Yeah I can’t see this being around for long. Same with the unofficial camera connection kits, might work for a few days/weeks but wouldn’t recommend investing in this!!
Also @BlueGreenSpiral
Nope this isn't that easy for Apple just read the whole story
hahaha ! Laugh of the day
It could also be used to install malicious stuff I guess. As the apps won't have to be approved by Apple first, there will be no checks against it.
Fair enough (mostly due to tldr). Edited my original comment to remove 'easily'.
Yeah interesting for free apps, but extremely unlikely I'd ever spend money there. It's bad enough wondering how long purchased apps will last in the official appstore
I’ve read the article now, still wouldn’t expect it to last long!
I don’t really see the point in this.
I just want something simpler, not more complicated., with better search functionality, and maybe get my Wishlist back.
Maybe this is for devs to sell their apps without going through the AppStore?
Maybe for installing ‘free’ apps without JB-ing?
I think it's great news if it'll manage to stay around. This is exactly what iOS needs to attract more and bigger developers to invest time/money in iOS.
Yeah I’ll pass on this too, for all Apple’s faults the one thing you can count on in the App Store is pretty much zero chance of malware.
I also use a Chromebook and that allows me to access tge Google Play store which I find a mess compared to the iOS App Store.
Yep, passing on this one.
I think it's pretty clear that his main motivation is making his emulator available, which couldn't ever be distributed through the regular App Store. So it's not jailbreaking, but it's basically the same motivations (besides piracy).
🤪🤩😇😳❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
But it would be so cool to be able to do that. Imagine, your unwanted app could be some one else’s wish! Apple would still make a sale profit🤯
And hopefully a cut could also go to the developer as a royalty.❤️❤️❤️
The Apple ID does not have to be the same Appe ID that a user is logged into on the iOS device. So you can use a throw-away Apple ID.
You look at it way too negative. Look what kind of tweaks jailbreaking offers, install GUI themes, resize icons or customize swipes, etc.
I doubt you will be able to do any of that. It will just allow you to install sandboxed apps like from the store, although they could use API’s that Apple does not allow you will not be able to do as much as a jailbreak. The last thing I’m going to install on my devices is any Apps that have not been checked for security.
The other thing is the app’s certificate only lasts 7 days to you will have to keep reinstalling it. Apple will either block this or make it more restrictive for genuine devs so not a good thing.
It may avoid having to pay annual dev fees on AppStore $99 or something.
Someone should develop a platform where we could resell, donate or disown apps that we don’t use anymore! That way, we can clean up the clutter and also feel good
Apple couldn’t crush this like a baby bug?
