I’m eyeballing the Blackbox for a while too.
Can you record automation? I haven’t found anything.
Like if I wanna automate a filter sweep or a FX send, do I need to resample?
Interesting!
Fair price as well.
Does it have LINK?
Been trying to figure that out myself. I’ve been getting maybe 20 mins every couple of days to work with this thing, and haven’t gotten that far yet! The slicer is genius level shit tho, I’ve never had so much fun slicing little sampled loops from global radio via Streemur
One more note about this guy, it will read one level of folders just fine, and it’s working flawlessly with Files app and the lightning SD card reader. If you are like me with a big back stock of 4-8 bar loops and stems you can feel the giddiness of up to 256gb of your loops in folders on a little game boy lookin thang and a tiny power bank to run it!
It doesn't record MIDI CC automation but you can record CV signals, which makes it useful for recording automation for synths with CV ins/outs.
I picked one of these up on Reverb and I'm honestly a bit torn on it. On the one hand, it's super small and easy to use. On the other, I was kind of hoping it would be more usable as an all-in-one brain than it's really suited for. It's laser focused on sampling, and does that well, but other stuff, like MIDI functionality and project organization, is just not as strong.
Thinking about swapping it and another piece of gear for an MPC One, which might be more what I'm looking for.
Then again, maybe I should just hook it up to my iPad, let NS2 be my MIDI brain, and let the Blackbox focus on what it's good at. :-)
If you like slicing and you can become friends with sampling in a wave editor or AudioShare, Groove Rider covers slicing, re-pitching and automation very well and my recent workflow was:
Load Streemur IAA in AudioShare and record a few snippets
Cut / trim to extract the best picks
Open the files in GR16 and slice them or use them as-is.
NS2 is great for single samples recorded to pads but slicing needs an awkward workaround.
(Can't deny that the Blackbox still has my attention though 😁)
Man, GR16 is one of those apps that I feel like I need to just throw myself into. I always have fun making little grooves on it, but haven't dug into its slicing capabilities as all. Good to know it's a good option for that; I'll give it a try.
Man, this little guy is a killer slicer. one feature im really digging i havent seen elsewhere is the slicer direction parameter in the sample menu. If you leave it off the slices play as you recorded them into the sequence, but you can change it so your slices advance forwards, backwards or randomly through the slice points. you can tweak this parameter while everything is running and get insane new phrases from your played slices that you would have never played yourself.
you got a link on this one?
I’ll have to video it, I haven’t seen anything up on it yet
Here is a description of what that Slice Seq parameter does @kobamoto
Here’s a few jams recently using the lovely slicer on the BB @kobamoto the first vid is me showing the slice sequence parameter, the second vid I got that melody by playing one in and then changing to random slice sequence and then resampling ...
Nice! Can you record those filter tweaks?
I'm also very interested in this device.
nice man, I get it now... thanks for the clips
I haven’t tried resampling filter movements yet, so I dunno. There’s not really much automation here. I’ll try and resample some filter stuff tonight and let ya know
Sorry I was late to the black party, are your videos still available anywhere?
Thanks!
shoots im gonna reupload soon
I bought a Blackbox 1010Music a few months ago and it was a blast. Nice little machine, bought it as a replacement for the MPC 2500 that occupied too much space. 1010music update the firmware frequently adding new features. SD card with loads of GBytes, granular synth, looping, sampling, sequencer including a bit of randomness...
All in all a great machine whose only fault was it brought me somehow to iPad musicmaking and since then I use it only occasionally
I did this too. And MPC has been the brains of my studio since the 2000. It was my main sequencer for iOS. I felt a needed a workflow change, so I sold all my mps. Got a blackbox to fill the hole. All in all, it’s a really fantastic device at a great price point. Alas, it was no replacement for an MPC and I eventually parted ways with it as well.
I’ve been MPC free for over a year now. I’ve run the gauntlet on sequencers (including a cirklon) and nothing has replaced the void the MPC left. So I guess I just gotta bite the bullet and come to terms that maybe I’ve been meant to keep the MPC. Still fitting the urge to get another 1000, but I think it’s enevitable.
Why the Blackbox is better than an iPad at doing what it does? I think I secretly try to ask someone to convince me to buy this. Thank you!
There’s nothing you can’t do on an iPad that you can do on a blackbox.
Be advised this list of things that you can modulate in the blackbox are quite limited.
If but you are looking for a standalone hardware sampler, it’s def worth a consideration.
I’ve been thinking about getting one for the longest however my iPad can do just about anything. Then I got my eyes on the dirty wave M8, really thinking about pre ordering one of those instead. It’s just so damn cool.
Ipad has it all, but sometimes even more than what you need. Like any hardware Blackbox restrictions make you focus, there are no endless possibilities, theres no internet or messages, you just sit in front of the little machine and make music
But it has plenty of sampling and sequences goodies to keep you occupied (for a while) and the developers are responsive, adding new features every now and then.
Actually really want the BlueBox. Deskspace being what it is around my place.
It’s fall 2022. I sold my iPad mini 5 and got a nice iPhone 11 for my iOS game. Together with the blackbox , a minirig 3 ,earbuds and an anker solar panel plus a couple power banks, this setup is the light and powerful I’ve been hunting this whole time.
The Blackbox has had some pretty big updates since it came out, and it’s a hair more complex because of that, but I highly recommend this machine if you are into small devices that are Swiss Army knives. I just throw All my little loops and snippets I make throughout the day on the 📱 11 and recombine them in the BB. The slicers random playback function with the LFOs gets almost generative.
Not to be too evangelical about the device but damn it’s hot shit and under rated.
Now as we have loopy pro. Is the black box still needed?
Not in my opinion. People like hardware but I treat the iPad like hardware, where I change the software based on my needs. Loopy Pro or AUM or Drambo cover most if not more than a lot of hardware.
I had a black box for a while. It's great, TINY and portable but has to be powered by an external source. It was the lack of onboard effects that let it down I thought. I had to use the ins/outs to use external effects. Sold it and bought an MPCLive2 earlier this year with the intention of learning it inside-out. Never had the time. A friend introduced me to Koala, never looked back! Sold the MPC.
