Quantum in ape matrix?

I’m sure this is old news and solved, but I would really appreciate some help with this. I just purchased quantum, but was confused when I couldn’t find it in ape matrix.

How is this used in ape matrix? Thanks so much.

  • Open both Quantum & apeMatrix.

    In Quantum:
Go to Devices in the upper left corner
Choose apeMatrix from the list of outputs on the bottom, and change the "Active" setting to "On"

    In apeMatrix:
    Open the MIDI matrix
Choose the MIDI DIN icon for an input
Quantum should show as an external MIDI source

Worked fine on my iPad Pro 12.9" running iPadOS 13.2 (newest).

Hope that does the trick for you.

  • Thanks for your help. So you need to run Quantum outside Ape Matrix, rather than a plugin?
Can you still use Ape Matrix to trigger Quantum?

I'm actually reverting back to using AUM instead of Ape Matrix, so I assume the same workflow applies?

    Thanks so much

  • You have to treat Quantum as an external MIDI source in apeMatrix, so assuming Quantum accepts incoming MIDI (pretty sure it does) then you'll have to send the signal from whatever app in apeMatrix to Quantum using the MIDI DIN icon in the MIDI matrix.

Yes - Quantum is not an AUv3, so it needs to run as a separate, stand-alone app from apeMatrix.

I've not used AUM in ages, but I would imagine that in theory the routing would be similar - but you'll have to check with the AUM experts out there as it's been a while.

  • So you're more an ape matrix user? I tried ape matrix but was disappointed in not being able to record each individual channel. I don't suppose you have a workaround for that? (slightly off topic). That's why I swapped over to AUM.

Yep, I am am much more of an apeMatrix user:

No, I've not figured out a workaround, but I've learned to make better use of Matrix 2 & 3, and separate my instruments by Matrix so I can more easily bounce down stems with only a few things muted ;)

In the Settings menu, you can set the Record & Export to be "per Matrix", meaning that you'll get 1 stem per matrix for a total of 3 stems at the output. I stage my jams accordingly so I spread things out to different matrices in case I want to bounce down.

I think there may be a bit of semantics confusion here.

Technically it’s correct that “Quantum ... has to be run as a separate, stand-alone app” because it isn’t actually running “inside” Ape matrix. But, conceptually, it can be launched and represented as inside Ape matrix, mainly for the convenience of being able to switch to it, and for it to be reloaded with the session (though without state saving). The steps to get Quantum going with Ape matrix are:

    1. Add Quantum as in input in Ape Matrix. You don’t need to worry about connects yet because it’s not an audio app. But make sure it’s enabled with the “power” icon at the right.
    2. Add whatever apps you want to send midi to and connect their audio.

    3. Touch the Quantum icon to open Quantum. Go to Devices and make sure that outbound midi for Quantum is enabled.

    4. Back in Ape matrix, open the midi matrix and touch the midi DIN icon in the left-hand column (not the top). Make sure that Quantum has a check mark next to it.

    5. Connect midi to the apps you want to control by putting a dot below them in the line of the midi DIN connector.

    6. At the bottom of the matrix, set up any midi channel filters you want to control which quantum racks or sequences to to the apps.

Setup in AUM is different but the same concept applies. You can load Quantum into AUM for convenience. You have to use the routing matrix to set up the midi connection.

AU connections are much simpler than IAA / MIDI connections. B)

    I hope that helps.

  • This is very helpful -- thanks for the clear instructions. I have it working sending Quantum straight to Synthmaster, but I want to add Cykle to receive data from Quantum and modify it, and then send that modified data to Synthmaster. Is that possible? I can't seem to connect any midi processor to Quantum via apeMatrix. I'd appreciate any help on this!

  • Any chance I can plug directly into your memory banks, @wim?

  • I don't have Cykle and I can't try any tests with other apps right now, but I can give what I think is the right answer. Ape Matrix works like a chain. So, you would want to add Cykle and route it to Synthmaster instead of Quantum. Then route Quantum to Cykle instead of Synthmaster.

There should be a dot at the intersection of Quantum and Cykle, and a dot at the intersection of Cykle and Synthmaster.

At least that's how I picture it. I can't say that there isn't some other problem with that which I'm not thinking of without the apps in front of me.

  • Thanks for the response. I fiddled with it for a while and wasn't able to get Quantum to trigger Cykle, but I was able to get StepPolyArp to receive input. I moved over to AUM and was able to get Quantum to talk to Cykle there -- I didn't put Quantum in AUM at all but routed it to AUM as a standalone app. It doesn't work exactly the way I thought it would -- I think I'll try using SPA or Rozeta in place of Cykle and see how that goes. Thank you!
