I’ve used isotope trash 1/2 quite a bit.
I’ve tried most of the iOS distortion/saturation apps, with the exception of Flection. Ime grind is the closest on iOS to isotope trash.
Grind can be subtle as long as you use the algo or wavetable separately.
I always start by setting everything to off, filter to bypass, mix to 100%, gate off.
Choose the algo setting only. algo contains more ‘traditional’ forms of dist/sat, types that our ears are more accustomed to ( wavetable dist/sat is more alien to most ears ).
Set your algo amount to about half, lower output level to appr. -10 db, set input gain to zero.
Play your track, drum loop, looped guitar phrase, etc. and slowly increase your input gain until you reach the more subtle distortion’s/saturation’s that you’re trying to achieve.
Experiment with algo amount. Use post and/or pre compression to taste. A cabinet impulse is sometimes useful (IR).
Once you’re accustomed to how the algo setting and input gain interact, add the filter and experiment with resonance.
Try the same steps with algo turned off and wavetable turned on.
Using the mix knob can also allow you to control what might be perceived as an extreme distortion ( more of the source signal, less of the distortion ).
Grind is quite deep.
The others mentioned are all useful. The guitar amp and effect emulators are useful (ToneStack, bias, etc).
I like to use grind, shaper, 4pocket overdrive, reamp, bandit, AUM saturator most often. They can also be interesting used in series and/or parallel.
Thanks for the tips on using Grind to best effect. I had written it off and now I can re-visit
with your recipe in hand.
Beatformer is unique and fast/easy. Definitely not redundant. It is useful on any instrument, not just drums/drum loops. Interesting distortion characteristics when utilising the input gain, with and without the limiter.
SquashIt is a multi band distortion, not a bit/sample rate reduction effect. Their reamp multi band distortion sounds much better.
If there’s something unique about the algorithm, I’m up for more bit/sample rate reduction effects. The problem is, the developers never tell us if it’s a custom, or cut/paste algorithm.
I hope the plogue developer releases chipcrusher for iOS.
Yes, and some proper fuzz.
Thanks for the input about the ifx rack. How is the ensemble and dimension d emulation?
