RF headphones as monitors live
It just downed on me that the old RF headphones might be my way in to affordable monitoring on stage. I don’t really require them to be in ear so I’m thinking this should work. Someone on the inter webs even mentions DIY converting them into a receiver pack to plug IEM into!
Has anyone explored this or/and used them on stage. What are the drawbacks? Any latency? Interference? Many thanks

If they work they work. Do they have the ability to change channels? And how far can you get from the transmitter? Rf shouldn’t inherently have delay like Bluetooth, but rf traffic can be very tricky. In nyc, open channels are getting hard to come by with the 600mhz spectrum now in use by t-mobile. I don’t know what the situation is on your side of the world.
I’d say try it and have your wired setup available in case it doesn’t work.
I have an inexpensive wireless iem system by phenyx pro (importer of Chinese made audio gear) that runs in the 900mhz spectrum and it has been fantastic for me, using my custom iem headset (aaw, purchased from null audio in Singapore on Black Friday last year). The total for that whole setup, with triple driver iem’s was about $500 US and I’ve used it on tons of bass and sound gigs since then.
Thanks @mrufino1
I’ve been eyeing up Anleon s2 which gets very good reviews but there seems to be an issue where at times a built in limiter kicks in and stops the sound for a couple of seconds. Might not be a massive issue with careful levels setting but hard to tell without actually trying one in action. That sells for only £75 in the uk for the 863-865mhz model. Might be a better route as opposed to messing with consumer grade stuff that was made for watching box sets on tv. I have to investigate what’s the band usage here though. Thanks
If you’re using good fitting Earphones you should never need to get it near the point where a limiter would kick in. That usually happens because people have a headset that lets in too much outside sound so the volume of the headsets and the volume feeding the transmitter goes up. Very easy to do damage very quickly that way.
Good point. I have a pair of earbuds that I moulded myself and they work pretty well at blocking out external sound.
I just found this. It’s on prime so I might take the plunge and see if this might work. It is 5v 100a so should be powered by a small power bank.

Just be careful with 2.4ghz, sometimes it’s great but when there’s a lot of router traffic it can ugly.
Never mind, I've ended up getting anleon s2 which operates in high 800s so should be ok. Will test it and post impressions when back from holidays.
Wait? Electronic artist headphones are actually there for more than looking cooler while you pretend to turn knobs?? I always assumed they weren't plugged in.
I'm using headphones with RF modulation using infrared, no latency, no radio interferences so far. They have four receivers (two on the front, two on the back) and work well.
Do you use them live on stage or in domestic setting? What brand/model?
No live use but i can imagine that IR will be less problematic regarding radio interferences.
One is an older AKG K333 and one is an older Philips SHC1300.
I would recommend comparing newer models though because the bass response of the Philips is rather weak, both have an open design and while they work well at home, they're certainly not powerful enough for use in a noisy live setting.
I thought about Frankensteining the SHC electronics with a DT770Pro and a stronger battery pack but I've not really needed it so far.
Cool, that sounds like it should work well for you. 800mhz isn’t legal in us anymore but I know you’re in the UK so I assume it works there. Best of luck with it!
Received Anleon S2 box and the receiver. Built well, easy to use and works well too. The volume it provides is plenty enough to hear myself and the dreaded limiter hasn’t jumped on me yet so should be ok. Haven’t tried it in the studio yet but I can see it being a success.
I just paired the Anleon S2 with KZ ES4 and have to say I’m almost there. Comfortable sound with plenty of bass and stage. I might diy custom mould them albeit they are already quite big so not sure if it is going to work but, who knows.
It’s great to finally have the monitoring sorted.
