AUM recording tails

Perhaps it's my inadequate experience/skills with AUM, and it may have been discussed before. If I have record enabled on an AUM lane, and I start recording, the transport causes stuff to play. Those things may have effects that continue after the transport stops (e.g. Reverb). How do I get those tails into what's recorded? If I start recording (and the transport also begins) recording takes place, but I can't stop the transport (and let the tails play and be recorded) without the recording also being stopped.

Currently I'm sending the audio to Auria Pro so that it will record everthing, including the tails, until I press stop in AP. Can this be done in AUM?

  • Yeah this comes up once in a while. I’ve seen some people talk about some workarounds but nothing which i found satisfactory. To my knowledge it cant be done in the way you want within AUM alone.

    I can see a method using AB3 to route the audio to AudioShare and recording there. That seems to work fine, but it takes a few extra connections/steps. I guess they're not much more bothersome than using AB3 to route to AuriaPro.

  • You need to put your FX in the post-fader mode, and use the mutes on the tracks while the transport keeps running. Hit stop when the FX are done fading away to end the recording.

    If you have multiple tracks, all with trailing FX, being bussed to a master recording track, you would need to mute each track except the master recording track. I suggest mapping those mute buttons to a single key or button on your midi controller so you can mute all of them in sync, rather than 1 by1.

    It looks like what you're saying is that the universal mute here is simply going to stop sending audio (except post-fader) to the master track, right? And it sounds like setting up that universal mute on a controller means going to each of several slave tracks individually and mapping their mute button. While I've learned more than I knew before, I'm not sure if (to me at least) the Auria Pro or "AudioShare as recorder" methods are less effort. Is there an advantage to doing it the way you describe?

    Well, if you are just recording one track, and want the input to stop while the FX trail away, putting the FX to post-fader and hitting mute on that track at the right time is pretty simple.

    For the more complicated setup, with multiple tracks, each with trailing FX, being recorded on a single AUM track via Buss, it just requires setting up a button or key to trigger the mutes on each trac simultaneously. It is pretty easy if you just midi-learn the connections. If just manually hitting each mute button can work in your situation, do that instead, and skip the bit about how to setup a key/button to mute a bunch of tracks together.

    This is just a way to do it in AUM. Those other ways you have are good too. Whichever works best for you should be the method you use.
    I was just providing an answer to your initial question, to let you know it can be done using track mutes rather than stopping the transport.

    Just as there's a preroll, it would be nice if there was a postroll, that would keep it recording for a specified number of bars (tempo stops, but tails, delays, and reverbs can ring out)

    I don't always want things to fade out. It's nice when things stop sometimes, but AUM will cut off any natural tails of instruments and reverbs.

    One of the many reasons I prefer using a hardware sequencer, but when I'm away from my studio, I run into this alot when sequencing within AUM. Recordings are either chopped, or faded out.

    Thanks! You’re right. The way you described answers my initial question. With your answer, I realized that trying to keep it all in AUM may be as much effort as just sending the audio to either Auria Pro or AudioShare, which requires using AB3 for audio routing, but I can control the recording transport independently in those apps, and therefore catch all the tail audio. And even better, with AB3 as part of the mix, I can expose and control the AP or AS transports without even leaving the AUM interface.

    Before this thread, I hadn’t understood that I can record in AudioShare. So that was something great to learn. Maybe that exposes my lack of knowledge about AudioShare, but anytime I can learn something, I’ll be happy to admit a shortcoming.

  • An audio unit can set the "tail time". I think it is up to the host to make use of this.
