Circle of Fifths - Poster

A few people asked for my Circle of Fifths design as a poster.

So it's now available at link below.

It's a twist on the conventional style, a Circle of 5ths of Circle of 5ths. :)

If you know the Circle then you'll be familiar with the positions and relationships of all keys relative to the note of C at the 12:00pm position.

This design puts those familiar positions at 12:00pm for all keys.

The medium is a good size for poster of this kind, although there is a slightly smaller cheaper option. A larger size available too.

Let me know if you have any questions. Cheers.

If you rotate it left 90 deg it will then show you the minor at 12 o'clock, but you'll need to ignore the numbers....
for example C Maj...rotate 90 deg left become A min (which is the relative minor key of C Maj), but number 6 will be at the top instead of 1,
So for it to work 100 % with rotate, you would need the numbers to not rotate...
    Hope that makes sense.

    Hey thanks, Andy.

Yeah this is particularly set up to display the relationships of all notes within a Major scale. So the numbers relate to the intervals of the key.

I was searching for a diagram that used the Circle of fifths in this way to easily display those relationships for extended chords.

A traditional Circle of 5ths can convey many aspects of Music Theory even in it's most basic form. Typically things like which chords belong to which scale, number of sharps & flats etc.

When first learning the Circle of Fifths, the patterns of relationships between the notes are learnt in the default C at 12pm position.

This will show you that the 5th interval of the Major key is one place to the right (G) and the 4th, one to the left (F). The Submediant 6th degree is at the 3pm position (A).

In order to find the Submediant of another key like Db for example you would look clockwise 3 places to find Bb.

What this design does, is show you all the degrees in their default positions so you wouldn't need to do that scanning like I mention in the sentence above. You look at the Circle of 5ths on that Db note and will find the Sub mediant Bb in the default position of 3pm.

This design from initial idea to finished product took 4 years. I did a version initially that was made using a 'superimpose' app that used nearly 1,000 photos. It looked good but was blurry when enlarged. This is why I spent time making an SVG version that is super crisp when enlarged to poster size.

I designed it for myself as it was a tool I wanted and use daily. I have 2 of these posters on my wall. :)

excellent explanation. that helps me understand it even more. you have two posters on your wall? what is on the other one?

Oh, it's the same design really. When music making I have two different viewing positions in the room. They each have a poster in view.

Also I was experimenting with different colours and printing companies, and bought initial samples to test. :)

I ordered a couple for friends from RedBubble and was really impressed with the quality which is why I feel comfortable posting about it here.

Ha. Maybe I should do one for Horoscopes too. 😂

  • I never understood what to do with a circle of 5th. Now it’s on acid 😬☹️🥺😭

  • Or maybe it a 12 bullets revolver. 🤔🤔
