Craziest iOS distortions

I love the distortions of WOW as well as the Grind and FuzzPlus apps by Audio Damage and the overdrive gain in RoxSyn -- any other notable candidates out there. The wilder/heavier the better.

    Shaper is my current fave. Does several classic distortions, but also bircrush, wave folding, and a dying battery, splatty, gated fuzz.

    I like Muckraker, as well, and it is free! It’s a crazy, noise style distortion, as opposed to a tasteful, bluesy color.

    With distortion, some nice accessories to pair with the distortion element is filtering before and/or after, the before filtering is interesting in that it doesn’t change the eq, so much as the quality/smoothness/honkiness of the distortion. Lowpass, resonant peaks, gentle low cut (the Rat sound).

    Also octave dividers before is great, or parked flanger after the distortion, makes cool, hollow sounds.

    Wild/heavy also made me to think of Muckraker. Fun to re-open those free apps (Frobulator, Nebulizer), although I had some problems with them in AUM but working fine in Audiobus. Could have been user error, so long since I tried non-AU effects.

    Just a personal preference, but I usually am not crazy about distortion blended with the clean sound, because the transients seem to pop through in a weird way, and the sounds seem to not mix together in a convincing way. Plenty of exceptions (like following the dist+clean blend, with light distortion, or just distorting the highs, like an exciter does), but I tend to like distortion as an insert effect, that the instrument passes through entirely, rather than a bus effect. I think that mainly has to do with the flattening of dynamics by distortion. It is the crudest form of compression, after all. Having something with dynamics, mixed with something with less/no dynamics, means the balance between the two is changing, throughout the note.

    As far as filtering “not changing the eq”, it might be better to say that filtering before the distortion doesn’t ultimately remove harmonics, the distortion adds back in harmonics/overtones to even muffled sounding sources. Like Brian May has some classic, smooth fuzz tones that come from rolling the tone knob on the guitar down (which translates to a 6dB/octave lowpass filter) and then running that into heavy fuzz, for a smooth, squarewave sound.

    Got good results running Ruismaker (Classic) through Shaper tonight with Moog Model D going through FuzzPlus. Getting me where I want to go! Shaper is currently on sale for 0.99p
