  • Helpful video on how to use Effectrix via IAA in Auria and Cubasis and how to use with Audiobus here:

  • Just got it but....I was under the impression it could process audio when inserted in the fx slot like turnado but it won't start the sequencer. Will it not work without using external midi apps? Also can I import an audio sample via audio copy? Can't see it and bit lazy to be going through the manual. :P

  • You will need an external MIDI Clock. Believe Audiocopy works (manual says it does, I haven't tried it yet, only used it with AB).

  • "External" to the app itself, not necessarily external to the iPad. Just to clarify.
And yes, you can bring in a sample with audio copy.

@supadom yes you can import audio samples. Tap on song title top centre on screen. iTunes, presets and AC are there. Tap on disc icon to export via AC.

EDIT: @Zymos beat me to it

  • Those who have Turnado and Effectrix... which one would you say is the better option on iPad? Or do they perform differently enough to warrant having and using both?
I've only ever used the desktop Turando, no experience with Effectrix at all. Looks cool though.

  • I'd say Effectrix is easier to use on the iPad than Turnado- the controls are less fiddly.

But really, they are quite different in function. Turnado is much more hands on performance oriented, and while Effectrix can definitely be "played" by switching patterns, it is still good just sitting there effecting audio.
Both of those, plus Wow, are some of my favorite apps, in spite of some rough edges.

  • I just had a bit of a play with effectrix by loading my own drum, then bass loops and have to say I'm not hugely overwhelmed by the results. (Thanks for the audio paste tip by the way). Even though turnado seemed a little daunting at first it is IMO easier to get on with straight out of the box. Just plug put it in audiobus fx slot, make sure the BPM is correct and you're away. Effectrix needs a free midi sync app for that purpose. It also in my experience needs a bit of understanding how individual effects affect the sound. While non of them is at all alien to me I found I need to be quite careful (as opposed to carefree) at drawing on the grid. I don't find it immediately pleasing as I found live fx or turnado. I almost wish I haven't got it which I grant (hope) may change with more time spent with it. I also never work with ready loops or beats from records which may be why I don't get on with it as much. Just a thought from me.

  • Ok, just run ielectribe into effectrix into bm2 with bm2 sending clock and start stop to effectrix and all that worked ok. Apart from bm2 running 1/4 sec later but hey.

  • Thanks for the good intel guys. Sounds like Effectrix is more for production and Turnado is more the live tool, though both can play the other role too, just not as well. About right? That helps greatly with decision making. Thank you!

One more thing that might be worth clarifying: if you are just loading a loop into it, you don't need to open Effectrix in Audiobus, or worry about sending it MIDI clock from another source. It works perfectly well standalone with no other apps needed.

  • Ok, I've tried another confi. Ielectribe effectrix loopy hd within AB. It works well but with ielectribe not synced to loopy or it goes into double speed. It does respond to start stop from loopy alongside effectrix so this combo works well. Effectrix could be used live too infact as well as turnado it's just in a different way. Once you've worked out what where to draw the fx 'notes' on the sequencer you'll soon figure out what works and what not. Clearly not all set ups will work with every rhythm and vice versa. It is almost like programmable turnado. It reminds me a bit of live fx where you can automate fx sweeps but a different kind of beast altogether. With grid effectrix lends itself a lot to rhythmical fx processing with results that can be very different (more precise) to turnado due to its choppy nature.

  • I don't think I will purchase Effectrix at this point in time, and at this price. I already own Turnado, and it works great for both applications. Perhaps I will purchase Sequential if I do want to do loop-based sonic destruction.

  • Not sure what I'm doing wrong but when in audio paste a loop it adds it to the end of existing loop instead of replacing it. Is this a feature or a bug?

Yea, a bug. It's fixed though, so should be sorted out in the upcoming update. And I believe you'll be able to paste multiple files with different names (now it's all "audiopaste.wav" and you'll get the merged audio thing).

To get around it, delete the existing pasted audio before pasting any new audio.

  • It seems that using the TurnadoMatik Lemur template (https://liine.net/en/community/user-library/view/439/) with Turnado yields something very similar to Effectrix. What is missing from this setup?

  • @badmaxton thank you for mentioning that. Already have lemur so that could greatly influence my decision if the template really yields similar results, kinda giving the best of both worlds.

  • I somehow find effectrix better for non percussive loops like tweaking pads or noisescapes. When AB 2 is out will have this on a pad, tornado on the drums and live fx on whatever else running in parallel. If ram takes it it will be freaktastic!

Latest update fixes the ACP 2 crash, and also the merging of audio when using the general paste board mentioned above (it adds a number to each new pasted audio file now). IAA works brilliantly with Cubasis and Auria, Effectrix internal sequencer knows where the play head in Auria/Cubasis is positioned at all times, so it always aligns correctly which is pretty useful for an effect unit like this. I haven't tested it with any other IAA capable DAW then those two though.

So a muy bien update, and works a lot more seamlessly in an iOS setup now.

  • Sorry for the old thread bump, but can anyone help me set up midi trigger in Effectrix running as an AUv3 insert effect in Cubasis? I can’t seem to get it to trigger.

I imagine that only AU automation to switch patterns will work in Cubasis. I could get it work in NS2 but not BM3 just based on how they handle midi / AU fx in general. But yah, luckily they made it so that Effectrix could pattern switch via AU automation.

  • Switching patterns is exactly what I’m failing to get it to do. It doesn’t show up as a midi destination in the automations list, and just adding the corresponding notes to the timeline that it’s an effect on doesn’t seem to work either. I’ve always struggled to fully understand midi so I’m sure it’s something I’m doing wrong.

Gotcha, ok here is a little video with how I think is the only way to do it. Sorry for the low mic audio as I explain. Someone is sleeping in the next room...

  • Thank you @AudioGus! If we ever meet in the post-apocalypse I owe you a beer.

  • Man, after trying this out and seeing if I could make any kind of useful workflow with it, I think Steinberg need to massively up their game with automations in Cubasis. If you try to draw these points by hand onto the automations timeline but get it a pixel out, nothing happens. So the only way to do it is to record them "as live". Maybe this is a midi limitation and I just don't understand it well enough.
