Connecting external midi hardware to Ipad Pro
Hello everyone,
I recently got the new Ipad Pro with only one usb-c outlet, and I am trying to find out how to connect an external midi controller to play my ios synths and also listen to the audio through a 2-way adapter connector. I got a usb-c to 3.5mm headphone charge 2-way adapter online, hoping that the midi controller would work through the adapter, but it does not seem to be working. The adapter has a usb-c slot and a regular round audio slot. I am using a 5 pin midi cord connected to a 3.5mm (1/8 inch) adapter but since I could not find a 5 pin midi cord to usb-c adapter, I connected the 3.5mm (1/8 inch) midi cord into the audio slot and then my headphone into the usb c slot on the adapter, but it did not work. I want to find out how others have managed to work around this. Thanks.

I use this with a usb c adapter

If you have an adapter that has an audio jack ("usb-c to 3.5mm headphone charge 2-way adapter") then plugging a midi cable in (even one that is supposed to be an "adapter") won't work.
If your midi equipment has 5 pin DIN plugs (sounds like it from what you've bought so far) then you have a two part problem (1) convert the DIN midi signal to USB midi (2) connect to your usb-c connection on your ipad.
For part 1 of your problem you need a midi interface. These are quite common, and the simple/cheap variety have 2 DIN plugs at one end, an 'interface' in the middle of the cable, and a USB plug at the other end. If you can find one of those with a USB-c plug you've solved part 2 as well, but I just didn't a quick search on amazon and didn't find one. So you may additionally need an adapter, and apple sell a 'Camera Connection Kit' that's commonly used for this purpose, at least for the lightning connector on iphones and some ipads.
Not quite sure if you have an audio interface or not. My set up is a Zoom U-44 audio interface which takes the midi cable from my hardware controller. From the iPad Pro I use a Hyperdrive 6in1 https://www.hypershop.com/collections/hyperdrive/products/hyperdrive-6-in-1-hub-for-ipad-pro-2018?variant=19332717412414
Thanks to everyone for their responses. I believe that I now know what to do which is, to get an audio interface to convert the hardware signal, and then get a usb-c adapter to connect the interface to the Ipad. Much appreciated.
