best way today to integrate my iPad Pro with Bitwig on my iMac?

I'm starting to use my iPad more and more for music and would appreciate advice for best workflow for my setup:

iMac / OSX 10.14
Bitwig 3
iConnectMIDI2+ midi interface
Scarlett 2i2 audio interface

iPad Pro / IOS 13

I'd like to work interchangeably. Most of the time, I want to generate sounds using my iPad and record them into Bitwig on my desktop but I want to be able to go both directions with MIDI and audio so I can have the audio or MIDI generated by either my desktop or my iPad.

Should I just use IDAM host and Audio MIDI setup on my iMac using a USB cable? Or should I send the MIDI through my iConnectMIDI2+ interface? Or should I use bluetooth for everything?

What is the most efficient way to hook this up so I have the least latency and most flexibility?

Things seem to keep progressing on interfacing the iPad with a desktop so looking for the most recent best way!

  • IDAM will work nicely but only gives a single shared midi port, and only a stereo audio channel from ipad to mac. note that bitwig supports Link.

    Thank you for the info!

  • IDAM works for me but only in one direction. I can send my desktop MIDI and Audio from the iPad, but I can't figure out how to get audio and MIDI from my iMac to my iPad using IDAM (in Bitwig). Any clues there?

I'm using the iPad device that shows up in Audio MIDI Setup as the audio input device on my desktop and as the MIDI input to my tracks and that works all fine, but how do I get it to go the other way? (in other words play midi from my desktop to a synth on my iPad and send audio generated on my iMac to a app on my iPad)

  • Does it have to be the exact same setup? I'd look into replacing both interfaces with an iConnectAudio4+. Solid, flexible, and less clutter.

You can send audio via the iconnect midi 2+ to and from the ipad and mac via usb, i think its 2 in 2 out at 24 bit 48khz.

  • I have almost that set-up. I use a Roland Duo-Capture EX audio interface (where I connect my guitar) -> powered USB hub -> into a Macbook Pro, ok? Then I have an ICM4+ also connected to the same Macbook Pro. In there I create an aggregated device that combines the two devices. I use Logic (but have used Ableton, and the theory is the same in any DAW), I have Logic open.

On one channel strip (in Logic) I use inputs from the audio interface (in reality the aggregated device) that I send towards a given set of outputs (which is the iPad, connected to the ICM4+). At the same time I have an output (stereo) from the iPad coming in to another channel strip. All my midi, which in my case is a midi keyboard, pedalboard and an iPhone 6S+ (apart from my iPad) goes in any/all directions, so you have to take care and turn off what you don't need to avoid midi overload. Other than that it works great for pushing both audio/midi in either direction.

It took some head scratching in the iConnectivity app (I use the old version, the new one I've never gotten to work like I need it to). Also, my MBP with Logic is constantly running. I mainly use my iPad for my music creation (because I need the limitations to stay creative) but it quite nice to be able to use Logics instruments should I choose to.

When I use MidiGuitar2 on my iPad I also enable the amp and the compressor in Logic in the effect slots to boost the signal from my guitar to my iPad. Apart from that I most often forget the MBP is actually running (and routing stuff).

IDAM does not offer audio from mac to ios device, but the shared midi port works in both directions.

Thanks, good to know it supposed to work. I haven't been able to make it happen yet...

  • do you see the midi port on ios?
are you sure you are routing midi to it?
are you sure you are routing from the port on the mac side?

    thanks!

Yes, I see the IDAM ports and I'm also trying it with the iConnectMIDI2+ ports. I see them and I can send MIDI from the iPad to my iMac, but not the other way.

so, yes I see the ports on the iPad
and not sure if I'm routing from Bitwig cause I don't see anything to specify sending MIDI out to either the IDAM port or iConnectMIDI2+ ports. If I generate MIDI on a track in Bitwig, I see the midi notes playing through the tracks, just not sure how to get it to my iPad. I'm just starting to use my iPad a lot but have not used it for over a year. I coulda sworn I had this all working before. Before IOS 12 even I think. Driving me nuts...

So, earlier, I had audio going to the iPad from my iMac in AUM but I can't get that working again now.

  • in bitwig you need to add a hardware instrument device on the midi track, and configure it to use the IDAM midi port

That's a great way to do it. Though I finally got the MIDI running both directions by using an aggregate device and it allowed MIDI both directions without having to use the hardware instrument device in Bitwig. And I can receive audio from my iPad but can't figure out how to send audio TO my iPad. The iPad device in Audio MIDI Setup shows the iPad's Output channels greyed out.

How can I send audio from my iMac to my desktop. Should I consider using Studiomux?

the iconnectmidi2+ sends audio, if you have a ipad and a mac you can send audio to and from the two devices via usb. if you screen shot your iconfig matrix i might be able to help..... maybe hihi

first, your ipad must be connected to Device port 1 as Device port 2 only send midi to the ipad.

Also check if ios audio is enabled.

It Works!!!! Trick was putting the Iconnect as the first device in the aggregate device! Then the audio passes back and forth.. I can't thank you enough! I've spend so many hours on this and now I can stop banging my head against the wall.

Only drawback to this setup is that I can't hear the audio when I route it to the iPad cause I don't have an headphone port on my iPad Pro 2018. Guess I need to get a hub now...

wooooHOOO! awesome :-) mmmm lets think about that new issue. Also i would check your set up to see if you are running at 24 bit. I assume you want that?

o wait. just created another audio track in Bitwig, then routed the audio back from iPad through iCM2+ and it seems to work.

cool, until you get use to it I would be a little careful for your ears for audio feedbacks, I made a mistake a few time when routing audio on my iconnectaudio4+ .... ouch
