  • @TimRussell Wow. That’s a lovely piece of music with an aspiration to greatness that really appeals to me. Lovely to hear something that dares to be different.

    Thoughts: the production is really good. Sounds are well-conceived to work together and are well balanced. One exception for me: I would have reduced the level of the ‘piano stabs’ in the first section over time to allow the listener’s attention to move to the other things that are going on. But maybe that was a deliberate choice on your part. It’s up to you after all. :)

    I adored the change into the string section and the sounds were spot on for me there. It made me think of early Genesis (somewhere in the middle of Supper’s Ready, perhaps).

    But then I didn’t get the last section at all. I actually looked up to see if SoundCloud had taken me to a different piece of music. Again, maybe that was your intention but for me the jolt was fine but the music it jolted me to didn’t follow what came before in a way I could make sense of.

    But really lovely. Thank you.

  • @Kitusai I loved every moment of it! Just superb stuff and what a wonderful voice to work with. I certainly have no criticism to make of any part of it - only praise and amazement.

    Now I’m off to listen to the rest of the album...

  • @klownshed Nice piece of work. I liked it a lot - it carried me along like a river, confident in its pace. I reckon you could get some space in there to advantage. Maybe that’s just different use of stereo reverb but it might also be some judicial EQing to separate out sounds from each other more.

  • @Faland I made the mistake of reading @richardyot ‘s comments while I was listening to this - and he got it right. So what he said!

    But a really nice track with a great feel and interesting lines. If it were my track I’d be tempted to re-amp the bass and percussion to give them a more live, organic feel. I think they deserve it. :)

    Thanks for listening and for your thoughtful feedback. I like your suggestion about reducing the volume of the piano over time and will give that a go.
    The little coda at the end is indeed meant to be surprising, and there is reason for it, and I agree it doesn’t really make sense in view of what preceded it!

  • Just catching up with comments for this month;

    @richardyot great intro and the song has got a hint of an Ultravox vibe to it. Good overall production but I thought it was maybe a little one paced. Loved you channeling your inner Rick Wakeman in the synth break.

    @DavidEnglish nice beat but could have done with some melodic bits.

    @Faland Solid instrumental with some interesting synth sounds. I liked the way the layers built up as it progressed

    @Kitusai No one could ever accuse you of being boring. Another really unique piece. Loved the atmosphere and I was getting a bit of a Middle Eastern vibe from somewhere. Great track again this month.

    @qryss pretty melody would have loved for you to have developed it into a full length piece.

    @kuhl nice 80s sounding synths reminded me of the night rider theme.

    @kinkujin I liked the groove at the start had a 70s funk feel. Not sure about the synth sound you chose for the melody.

    @Elvisthenrodent nice beat but it takes too long to get anywhere. Need to create a bit more interest earlier in the piece.

    @klownshed liked this one. It’s got a bit of a tribal rhythm going and it has been nicely structured and arranged with some interesting synth sounds.

    @trackedout another song in your own unique style.

    @TimRussell I am all for creating atmosphere but I think you could have developed your themes earlier in the piece. Some nice melodic touches and a great production but a bit lengthy.

    Hi guys! This is my first post in this (amazing) forum...

    I started making music about 2 1/2 years ago with the Tascam DP008 Portable Studio, an acoustic guitar and some apps (Nanoloop!!!) on my Samsung Phone...

    I am kind of a seasoned bike traveller and so my setup had to be mobile... 2018 then I settled for a whole year, earned some money and invested in gear before returning to the bike in March... And went mobile recording again. Bought me some iPad and (too much) apps... :-P

    It turned out, that the trip was too exhausting and I had no energy left to invest in creating music in the end of the Day... Now stationary again since end of september and slowly relearning my tools again...

    So here's a track I recorded yesterday in Beatmaker 3. Also used Grooverider GR 16 for the drums and short voice samples and Pure Acid for that short Bassline... Guitar, Vocals, Drumbreak and Synth all sampled from Various Songs I've found in the /vintageobscura Thread on Reddit... Best substitute for Crate Digging I've found since sold my vinyl collection back in 2008...

    Okay, sorry for the long blabla, but since it's my first post, I've felt for some Introduction :-P
    Will now enjoy listening slowly through your songs guys and give my 5 cents to it...

    @richardyot

    Our twilight lives:

    I like it. Very nice song! Haven't listened this kind of music for long time... Reminds me of something from the 80ies... Like (The Smiths?) or a bit Cure......?
    The general mood of the song fits very good to the lyrics... Which are dope by the way.. English isn't my motherlanguage but I started feeling a bit desperate and uncomfortable by listening to your words and music.... ;-) Definitely not some feel good song but iy got some special mood which it transports very well.
    Maybe The borders between chorus and verse could've been clearer for me but when that guitar came in for the solo... Wooo... Nice!

    @DavidEnglish

    Grovey

    Some nice 'Old School' Minimal Techno! Reminds me of Yello from the 80ies... There are some things happening and it's not getting boring, because the rhythm is moving forward... But one is always waiting for some big change.. Think it's called 'Breakdown'? Excuse my english...
    The song got a bit some mysterious vibe. But also like someone being chased in some cold dystopian technocracy state... :-P Good for some soundtrack...

    @Faland

    Skinny Rocker

    Nice instrumental Jam! A bit Oriental and a bit Krautrock Vibes... Nice! The Change of Instruments is keeping it interesting. Maybe that one lead is a bit too loud and the drums could be better panned... Not really sure aboit this, because I'm still very beginner in mixing and mastering... The last half minute of the song is 👍

    @Kitusai

    Cri Primal

    Wow! Just wow! Very good song, love it! All amazing, arrangement, vocals, lyrics, mixing... Very unique. Inspiring. Great spoken word. Is it called 'Stream of consciousness'? Bien fait! Chapeau! :-)

    @qryss

    In Memory of ourselves

    Oos, I closed my eyes and leaned back... And the song was already over ;-P Very atmospheric... Can also imagine the build up, how you explained it... Reminds me a bit on the soundtrack of Hollow Knight by Christopher Larkin... Hope the film will get good marks!

    @Kühl

    Transformator starts interesting but I have to admit I started skipping through it, because over 7 minutes is too much for my short attention span ;-P
    So, the Bach G Minor Fugue: Interesting piece of music. Also something I would probably never listen to, to be honest. Probably to 'mathematic' and 'kühl' for me... Reminded me a bit of playing Computer Games in the 80ies on some Schneider CPC Green Monitor Computer... You mentioned Krautrock... I think Tangerine Dream sounds sometimes a bit like this... Not sure, because I'm more into the guitar heavy Krautrock like Guru Guru (okay maybe more drum heavy) or Kraan (bass..)

    @kinkujin

    Gritty Nit

    Yeah man, that bassline is really dope!! I just danced around in my kitchen to it... Nice Track! And Grooverider!! I just discovered it the last week together with Pure Acid. Understood nothing in the beginning and had to watch some tutorials (The ones from Electronisounds are great!) Now I'm also thinking about getting the IAPs because the sounds are really fat. Playing around with it, also inspired me to the track I put up here... But using only Grooverider feels a bit stiff in my opinion... Too quantized somehow, but yeah great app, really fun and looking forward to hear more from you playing around with it!
    Ps: Did you check out the free sound sets from fenixsong.com?

    @Elvisthenrodent

    November

    Nice, solid techno groove! Sounds very good to me... Good build up... Would rave to it like crazy in a dark, smokey club... And when those claps come in... Woo! Hands in the air!! Only thing: Maybe the claps could clap even more clappier! ;-)

    @orchardman

    Different name

    Good songwriting! Love the arrangement, the sound of the guitar, the brass part, her voice... Can't judge the lyrics (english isn't my first language) The song got some retro vibe... My only complaint would be, that for me the vocals sound 'not so much sitting in the mix'... Sounds a bit like through a tube..? Maybe it's on purpose, but for my taste they should sound warmer somehow...

    @klownshed

    Lies

    Wow! Very atmospheric! Good arrangement! That bassline... Fire! Very nice also, how you describe a bit, how this track came alive, I like that... But what's the deal with that BlocsWave? How does it help you? Somehow I'm not getting behind the idea of it yet...

    @trackedout

    Tired

    Haha, that song made me smile, what is always good, because I love weird and funny music... Unfortunately can't understand the lyrics... But I like the mumbling... All in all it reminds me a bit on the early albums of my favorite band Ween, which I love because if the 'Unperfection' and Humour... Very nice, have to listen to your other stuff... Only thing which is strange production wise, is that around 1:27 you're raising the volume suddenly...

    @TimRussell

    Lark a men Du

    Ooh over 8 minutes? Directly a problem for a short attention span person like me ;-P... Very pink floydish beginning... Like in Echoes a bit... But then very slow build up... Maybe it gets a bit boring then because too long...? Big surprise is the last minute then. I looked at my phone (started doing dishes meanwhile), is it still the same track? :-D And suddenly it seemed you intended to lull the listener a bit in the 7 minutes before...

    Very nice selection of music here guys! Definitely got inspired. Have a nice day everyone! :-)

  • @uglyskratch thanks for the listen! I’ll make sure to review your track tomorrow (it’s late here un the UK).

    Hello @uglyskratch and welcome to the SOTMC!

    I enjoyed this track, it really reminded me of the sample-heavy music that was around in the late 90s and early 2000s, especially Avalanches and DJ Shadow.

    What's great about this style of music is the way the disparate samples create these crazy contrasts, it feels very anarchic and uplifting. Your track fits very well in this genre, it has a fun and upbeat vibe and overall the production was very good.

    The thing that really makes it work is the variety of the vocal samples, which keeps the track interesting as each new sample comes along to surprise us. It's like a musical collage.

    The bassline is great as well, one of the highlights of the track.

    Thanks Richard, for taking your time listening to my song and the feedback, really appreciate that.
    Yeah I really had the intention to make some track in the direction of 'Fatboy Slim' or the 'Chemical Brothers' a bit... Because picking random songs, searching for nice samples and try to make them fit together is somehow fun and challenging (and you find nice hidden musical gems along the way...

    Hey Guys, as you are members of the SOTMC! I just wondered, why nobody except @richardyot reacted neither to the song I posted, nor to the feedback I gave to everyone...

    Sorry, I don't wanna be like the small boy begging for attention. But I thought maybe tagging your usernames didn't work, because I edited them in my initial feedback post after listening to everyones song one after the other... So maybe that's the reason... Or you guys all are too busy and I'm just too late.. :-P

    Have a nice day everyone!

    So thanks for answering and have fun listen through all tunes... Took me several hours ;-) But was fun, inspiring and made me even explore more from some guys...

    Most people here are pretty good about giving feedback, but understandably it can take a while for people to get around to it.

    From the people who have posted this month pretty much everyone has taken the time to give some feedback back to others (with two exceptions, they know who they are), so hopefully they will get round to listening to your track.

    The SOTMC only works if people reciprocate so you are quite right to point this out.

  • @uglyskratch

    in the last weeks I have only been able to connect via mobile for short moments, many but fleeting moments in which I can write two or three lines, but in which I have no time to listen undisturbed for 5 or 6 minutes, with the concentration necessary to give the clear judgment on the songs that they deserve. As soon as I can, I will write something about the tracks I was able to hear. I'm sorry you felt ignored, it wasn't my intention.

  • @uglyskratch said:

    Wow! Very atmospheric! Good arrangement! That bassline... Fire! Very nice also, how you describe a bit, how this track came alive, I like that... But what's the deal with that BlocsWave? How does it help you? Somehow I'm not getting behind the idea of it yet...>

    Thanks :-)

    I use BlocsWave a lot for jamming out arrangements and for getting ideas for new tracks.

    In order for Blocs to be any use, you need to feed it though. Whenever I get a seed of an idea in NS2 or AUM or any of the standalone drum machines like iElectribe or DM-2 on the iPad, I export loops into BlocsWave.

    When I'm working on a song on the iPad, say, I will export the stems to BlocsWave on my phone so that I can play back various arrangement ideas on my phone and then use the iPad or Logic on the Mac to flesh them out.

    With "Lies" I was working on a completely different song. I took elements of that song in a BlocsWave bank and started randomly adding different sections (drums, percussion, melody, etc.) which is what Blocs is all about. Often the loops you add sound better at the new tempo/pitch and you get some nice happy accidents.

    But the key here is the majority of the loops I'm adding are my own. Every time I get a cool loop going in whatever app I'm playing with I try and export it to BW to keep building up the library. I don't tend to use any of the BlocsWave content and haven't purchased any of the additional packs.

    Playing around with a song in BlocsWave is how "Lies" started becoming it's own thing and went into a completely different direction. Once this new direction became a song of its own, I used Blocs to flesh it out some more then exported the BlocsWave project as WAVs and used them as the basis of the arrangement in Logic. I then went back and forth quite a bit; I exported parts that I'd added in Logic and added them back into BW to keep things going. When things are getting to the point that I think I have all the elements I need, sometimes I will then export to Launchpad so that you get the full grid of loops to trigger and see how different elements from different sections go together.

    BlocsWave is so immediate, I often load it up when I have 5 minutes just to listen back to my works-in-progress... And sometimes inspiration strikes. =) Songs that had stalled suddenly become your current project.

    One further point, when I'm staring at a Logic arrangement screen I often find myself adding too many elements. BlocsWave helps me keep the song simple and not get bogged down on details which is easily done with an app like Logic where you end up with having too much control over each element. Committing things like drums to fixed loops early on speeds things up for me no end.

  • @richardyot

    Yeah, how I already said, I wasn't sure if the tagging had worked and wanted to double check... Of course I understand, that you need a quiet moment, where you can be focused and concentrated to listen to someones submission. Like @Faland said: It's easy to write some lines on the go, but if you commit to give honest feedback, you need to find some time where you can be focused...

    We all live so busy lives nowadays... Slow down boys! .. Make more time lying on the bed with headphones in your ears, starring at the ceiling and get lost in some good music 😁😉✌️

    But seriously,... I like listening music since early teenager years (all started with ACDC 😂🤘) and since then it's like a journey. Discovering new (and old) stuff all the time... Different genres, different moods...

    So I became quite excited and euphoric about this SOTMC Thing, because it's not only about, that I can show some own creation to others (and get feedback 😉) No, I also can listen very different styles and even having direct contact with the creator!!! I would've dreamed about having such an opportunity back in the days when lying on my teenage bed listening 'Dirty Deeds' 😜

  • @klownshed said:

    Aah, so my hunch was right... Next time I will make one post per feedback... ☝️😉

    And thanks a lot for describing your workflow with BlocsWave... Now I get it a bit... It's to spark inspiration...

    Good idea, I think i should give it a try to implement it in my workflow, at least for the sometimes 'leftover' parts or 'Jam Projects' ... Which normally just ger buries somewhere in the depths of Audio Share...

    But you got any clue how to delete User Loops in Blocs? I just started it and found some very old Nonsense Loops which I once recorded. But would like to make a clean sheet before starting feeding into it...

    Sorry to be so late in getting back to this month’s songs. I had some family matters come up that took priority.

    @richardyot
    Really like the triangle-like opening. Nice vocal with a good blend of support voices. Catchy melody with good instrumental variations on the second verse. The guitar solo integrates well with the rest of the song. Good wind-down that successfully echoes the opening without overemphasizing the connection. A track worth repeat visits.

    @Faland
    I love the squishy fluid feel of the song that hits you right out of the gate. It’s nicely layered with the various elements aptly positioned in the stereo space. It transitions comfortably into the synth solo. I particularly like the tripping-over-the-keys in the solo lead near the end. Good build up at the end with the various elements reappearing for the finale.

    @Kitusai and CAAt Claw
    Not understanding the French lyrics doesn’t seem to get in the way of appreciating the song. I can’t tell if she is saying something meaningful or just reciting a list, but either way, it’s successful because her voice, pacing, and insistent tone help to drive the music forward. The singing is an especially nice counterpoint to the recitation.

    @qryss
    Very nice piano sound at a leisurely pace that allows you to reflect on the music. Would work well with visuals, assuming the soundtrack is for a film or video project. This is a shorter piece that causes the listener to want more -- which is the best way to please an audience. It’s appropriately crafted for a soundtrack, in that it’s interesting both sonically and as a composition, but it isn’t so busy it can’t be complementary to something else.

    @Kühl
    I really like this track. It’s a good mix of beats, electronic synths, and found object sounds. Lots of variety as it progresses through genres and venues. The fugue-like section around 3:40 works well without seeming to be sandwiched in.

    @kinkujin
    Nice beat that’s spare enough to leave room for what’s to come. I like the echo-y lead, in that it fits well into the aural landscape. Mid-song drop to just the drum might seem too spare, but it works because it breaks with expectations.

    @Elvisthenrodent
    I like the slow build up to include a solid synth beat. The overall feel has a nice open quality. I also like the retro quality of the electronic sounds. Minimal with enough movement and variety to keep everything interesting.

    @orchardman
    I really like the guitar opening. The solo voice is solid, and it blends in appropriately with the instruments. This is a nice toe-tapping tune with good lyrics carried through by a first-class production.

    @klownshed
    Excellent opening that’s both electric and mysterious. Good beat that establishes where the song is likely to go. I especially like the voice-like shimmer that peeks into the song. Progresses well to a solid conclusion. This one is quite exceptional.

    @TimRussell
    Terrific opening that creates some anticipation for where it might go musically. The water sound is an unexpected but intriguing direction. I really like the flute-like notes in the background. The whole thing builds up successfully without feeling false to the opening. Good introduction of cumulative elements without feeling piled on. Surprising (and successful) fade down only to build back up again. The coda is another twist that works well and is totally unexpected. Overall, the evolutions, false exits, and surprise turns make for a very engaging song. Well done.

    @uglyskratch
    Very good in-your-face track with interesting change-overs. Some nice surprises (cool reference to dopamine) keep it moving to a strong finish.

    Heya Uglysktratch! Took the time to listen - sorry it took me so long.

    That was a surprise and very hip. 2-1/2 years? Get out!! Very very cool. I have no real critique - very well done and looking forward to hearing more from you. Yeah man.

  • @uglyskratch Nice track. Not my usual fare for listening but really interesting to listen to - a nicely restrained mixture of things to delight the ears. The mix is great, the instrumentation and sample choices are excellent. Really nothing to fault and lots to enjoy. Looking forward to hearing what else you can do!

    And thanks for your comments on my tiny piece. Much appreciated. I don’t know the soundtrack you reference but I’ll look it up. :)

  • @DavidEnglish Thanks for your thoughtful comments. Much appreciated!

  • @kinkujin Nice piece of music! I really liked that. I reckon it needs to be developed more into a longer piece and needs some mixing but I get that you were just learning GR16 and this was an early output of that.

  • @Elvisthenrodent I loved this. It made me immediately want to go out clubbing - but instead I have to go to work. :(

    I really liked the sounds and the ideas. The opening was great but I felt the track as a whole needed to develop - more light and shade perhaps to make the special bits more special. Maybe save the big ideas and intersperse them with something sparser - like a verse|chorus structure, I suppose.

    I liked your track. It does have that kind of DJ Shadow vibe. If I could suggest one thing it would be to give the main drum loop a bit more groove maybe? I like it, but it sounds a bit drum-machinery In context rather than sampled or chopped up loop which could suit the overall sound if the track a bit more maybe?

    Thinking about DJ Shadow Perhaps I’m too biased about his early stuff which was so much better than anything post private press.

    If you haven’t already listened I can thoroughly recommend Psyence Fiction by UNKLE. Much maligned at the time but I think it’s one of the best things DJ shadow has ever done. Take a listen to ‘guns blazing’ and you’ll see where I’m coming from about the drums. And then you’ll Also realise how out of touch and irrelevant I am :-)

    First of all, thanks everyone for the input on my contribution to this thread.

    Another track with high attention to detail, the buildup is just right and the solo hits at the right spot in this track. As others said i sense some stone roses in this track. Rather dark lyrics but that fits just in this creation. The bassline is great and keeps the tension up throughout the track. This is next level songwriting, for what my opinion is worth.

    Nice track very punchy, you take off and practically don't stop till the end which is very energetic. But i think that maybe a rest and a buildup to a climax would take the track to a higher level. I also like the variation in the percussion near the end. The track has some spooky elements that are great.

    @Faland
    This is really something special, and i don't mean that in a bad way.
    Has a spacey feel, the bassline in the background is great. When the scratching comes in and later the strings near the end i believe it takes the track to very subtle climax. Well thought out and original track.

    @Kitusai
    This track doesn't do anything for me i'm afraid. I don't think i can be very objective because the spoken word genre is something i really don't like.
    The music carries the performance of your partner in crime in this track, but as i said spoken word is a genre that let's me put my ears under a pillow. So i do think the music sounds good, and it matches the spoken word just right. The lyrics are well written too.

    @kinkujin
    Track has a nice laidback groove to it. There ois more in it i think, perhaps you can develop the track even further and try too build up more to a flashpoint.

    @qryss
    Beautifull, i really love the calmness that this piece of music breathes. I could listen all day to this stuff.

    @Kühl

    The transformator... what's with the hairy armpits bro😊.
    To me it's like a mix, of three songs. Up to 2 minutes it think it's amazing, the second part with the vocals not so good i think, third part was again good but not on par with the first part. 7 minutes is very long, somehow i think it's very hard to keep people's attention that period of time. My guess is you are classically trained and then it makes sense but to the more casual hobbyist musician that's tough to swallow. On to the next part the bach, not my cup of tea. Not because of inferior quality of sounds or composition. But again this is a piece of music that is tough too digest for me. From the two tracks you posted the first two minutes of transformator were the best.

    @orchardman
    Great track, guitar playing and vocals. One point to improve is the mix. Sounds like a backing track with vocals on top. The vocals don't blend enough with the rest of the instruments.

    @klownshed
    What was that man? You totally blew my mind, usually i'm not keen on the use of vocoders. But the mix is very good, the kick is massive on my stereo. The whole vibe of the song is intense. More where that came from please, best track so far for me. Still got a couple to work through.
    I really would see someone starting a dj set with this only too blow the roof off in the end. Really nice!!!

    @trackedout
    This is like instant pete doherty too me, some spice in the voice at some point be better. Maybe were you increase the volume?The sleepy timbre of the vocals throughout the whole song starts to get annoying, some variation would make the song better i think.

    @TimRussell
    Nice track, very nice build up slowly making your way to the last 2 minutes. Must say i thought a new track started to play at the 6 minute mark. Gave it another listen and i find it original that you wen't ahead and placed an uptempo piece in the end. All the sounds are good and match with each other. Really like it.

    @uglyskratch

    First of all thanks for the shoutout to post opinions. It's part of the club rules so i made time today. Really nice track, made me think of czarface somehow. Good beats, basslines and the guitar that syncs with the onetwo is cool. Keep it up, glad to hear more stuff like this.

    Thanks for the listen and the feedback - and also thanks to @DavidEnglish for that monster feedback post. Lots of great discussion this month.
