Using Reference Tracks in iOS
I have been doing some research on how to properly use reference tracks recently and ran across a really cool tool called REFERENCE: https://www.masteringthemix.com/products/reference
Does anything like this currently exist on iOS or do I have to wait for 4Pockets to churn one out (haha)? Assuming you use them, how do you currently handle reference tracks?
How do you select your reference tracks? One interesting thing I saw suggested using multiple tracks as limiting "boundaries" rather than one or two as ideal "targets." I'd never approached it that way but can see the utility.

I didn't even know such a thing existed. Having this on my iPad would be sensational. Let's hope 4pockets does indeed have a crack at it 🙂
I did some research into this a while back and couldn’t find anything that could do it.
However now that I use AUM, you can just load a fileplayer in a separate channel to the master one. Doesn’t help with any other daws mind.
Thanks @gregsmith that's kind of what I thought, as well.
@4Pockets Any interest in this idea? I'm sure you could make something great, and there's nothing quite like it on iOS.
I know this is an old thread now, but I’m currently mastering a track in logic pro and am facing the same problem. The AI Mastering Assistant will only go on the final stereo out track, so I don’t think there’s any way to bus around it.
Even the preview in the media bay goes via the stereo out track.
Anyone got any methods? I can solo the reference track then bypass the mastering assistant but 2 clicks doesn’t make for the best A/B experience.
Trinity is explicitly based around reference-based mastering. It's available for Mac and iPhone too.
one tip I have for reference tracks is one that seams obvious but eluded me for longer than I care to admit.
Use a track in the same key (same bpm just makes it easier, but same key helps me when it comes to comparing lower frequencies.
I did ultimately buy Trinity and can 100% confirm that having the ability to master using the reference track improved my results. Do wish there was an AUv3 option to use with my custom chains but Trinity is a great tool by @SevenSystems
I know best practice is to master separately on a final stereo mix, but I like to do it as part of the whole process, and I’m kinda liking what I’m getting from the ai mastering assistant.
It’d just be good to be able to have a reference track in there.
I might have just found a way. I didn’t think you could use the mastering assistant on any track other than the final master, but it turns out you can copy and paste it to other channels. This means I can have a mastering bus and a reference bus and A/B between them.
Edit: can confirm this works really well. Just mute the reference track then hit solo on it to a/b with one tap.
💫 Thanks! And I understand the AUv3 situation! 😊
