Attenuate iPad built in mic input

is there any way to attenuate the input level on the iPad built in mic ?

you could use one of the AUFX series apps to pad the signal, they have a pretty light footprint if you wanted to route it to another app. Just make sure to turn off the lookahead limiter unless you're cool with the 10ms delay that it introduces.

Maybe the AUFX:Peak app would be useful to EQ the signal a little since the mic's freq response may be a little less than optimal as well?

  • Thanks Daveproper. Ive tried using the audio bus mic input right into a "mastering" input on the effect chain and the signal was still too hot going in. I found the built in mic on the iPad 2 to be usable for practicing guitar, but the built mic on the iPad 4 seems to have a different set of specs (worse EQ and too hot).

I will try Audio peak and see how that works.

  • The app 'Mastering' now has an input level reduction (as well as EQ and other effects). I'd try to run it through as many effects apps as you've got and see what's best. (I'm trying some similar tests myself, nothing great yet). - If you come up with a specific app/settings combination for an IPad Mic at a specific distance, please please share it with us all here. That's info that could benefit everyone!

  • "Mastering " has a 90ms latency so it was a little hard to use as a front end device to reduce the input level if I used input monitoring. I m not sure I understand at this point how to use the input reduction as it seems to make no difference. Proximity to the mic really makes a big difference. Noise horse, which iPad are you using? I found the iPad 2 'dmic to be quite useful. Much warmer and tamer than the mic in the iPad 4 gen.

  • I've got the IPad4. Ya I don't use its microphone for vocals, I can never find the sweet spot to get it to sound right.

  • I assume you've tried some eqing etc to try to warm things up...so have I and it seems, at this point to be hopeless. It's disappointing because I was able to get the iPad 2 mic to sound quite good. They must have changed something. I ll keep experimenting and post if something works. In the meantime, have you found a mic or preamp combination you like?
