Assistance Buying/Recomnd: Laptop
Ok, so need a gift for XMAS to buy.
Person needs Laptop for school.
However, they don't do any music or video editing. They do google, email, amazon, and will need to do basic word processing.
They have a brand new iPad Pro.
They want a laptop. They also want a MacBook.
I told them they do not need to spend that much on it for what they want to do.
What is a decent PC that would do all the things I mentioned for a good price? The person fears the virus/malware stuff associated with PC as well if that factors into your recommendation.
Thanks for any advice you have. I have a MacBook and really don't know PCs anymore
I know all you know everything......lol
APPRECIATE IT!

A keyboadr and mouse for the iPad Pro?
Or a chrome book or
A brydge https://www.brydge.co.uk/products/brydge-for-ipad-pro-2018
cheapest laptop from the online mega store is fine, how is the octatrack going? complete silence on that western front.
If you are talking about university, a surprising number of programs and courses have specific requirements now. Classes require software like the do books. Life sciences, biology, etc. often require R and spreadsheets. Many require Matlab and presentation software. My son is in an engineering program and he's had requirements of Logic and Adobe CC.
The only safe choice now is a Mac with enough disk space to install Windows in a VM or via Bootcamp. Personally, I wouldn't want to haul a laptop around with me to classes, but they are using them in labs and recitation sections constantly now. There really isn't much of a choice but to carry a laptop with you.
Specifications should be
IPS display
SSD
8G Ram
True quad core ( not 2core 4 threads and for sure not Atom based)
Hmmm, yah I am with the @Jocphone on this and a keyboard / mouse for an ipad Pro seems to make the most sense to me. My Dad got a base iPad a few months ago after years of me telling him he would likely abandon desktop/laptop etc if he did and sure enough to his surprise he has zero interest in turning his 'computer' on now. Anywho...
What is it they need from a laptop? Compatibility with some file format or something?
My kids have been using Chromebook's through high school and into college. They have no complaints.
I bought a brand new Macbook Pro (base model) back in 2014 , still runs as good as new and intel cpus are barely improving with each successive generation now, so it’s still almost as fast as recent laptops.
If it were me, I’d buy an older used or refurbished Macbook Pro. 2013-2015 ...
Take a look at Lenovo's Ideapad 500 series. I got one for my kid last year (530s) and it is great. Great keyboard (much better than the one on my MacBook pro 2019), metal build, IPS screen, 256GB SSD, 8GB of RAM. It has a dual core i7, but you don't really need a quad core for internet/word, not even an i7. Overall a great all around laptop.
No, she won't do that....I know
You seem too young in spirit to have kids that old!
Online Bachelors...she has a full time career but wants to go a diff direction so needs to grab this.
(laughs)
Well, I think I am over the hump for live loop/sampling and am actually in the midst of figuring out the real estate in the studio, plus I am taking all reptiles into the studio / doubling as a reptile room because the Xmas tree and all that needs reptile space in other rooms...
So little bit of a territorial war that has been going on.
I lost of course.
But, the OCTA has NOT BEEN ANYTHING but a good thing!
I actually feel like I may be able to pair off the Model Circuit and replace that with an Erica synths module set up.
Once I get a little more versed in the OCTA and have the room better worked on I will give tour....
I actually had a goal of a YT channel for the start of the year....so we shall see!
I think they look good
That should help narrow down the requirements. They probably have suggestions and requirements for software and hardware needed for the program.
If I were setting up for an online course that needed a computer and I didn't have to have a laptop and I already had an iPad, I'd get a Mac mini. The iPad would already cover things like sitting on the couch and reading/watching course material. The mini could cover both Windows and Mac software and is easier to upgrade than a laptop -- cheaper too.
woooooooohhh! you can have the lizards in your YT videos! That dinosaur one would give you 20 thousand hits without you playing a single note.
Wow, great thought
Left...Panther Chameleon.
Under it in a little tank is nocturnal gecko....to the right on the shelf..the "Dino Savanah Monitor" and under is Bearded Dragon. On other wall on back side you can't see is medical antique equipment and lab stuff from various morgues and labs along with a Leopard Gecko.
And then there is the music stuff.
I figure the channel has a lot to look at and do....
That isn't even going in to the other room with the Macaw and Indian Ringneck.
What ever you buy, DO NOT BUY A CHROMEBOOK.
What Mac mini would you recommend for someone on a budget ?
I'd consider a refurb'ed or used MacBook and save every penny for the required
software and the insane tuition fees of any higher institution. Oracle VirtualBox for
Windows required apps or VMware Fusion. Used or refurb'ed Mini if mobility is not required
but who doesn't want to do some online work from a coffee shop or restaurant at crunch time for caffein or sustenance. Really... online. You'd want to get out occasionally, right?
The new cheapest model is good enough for basic stuff. I have one for general browser/youtube machine in the living room and have no complaints. I havent tested any music apps with it, but i have noticed its not as powerful as my 2015 15" mbp, but its not too far from it
por que?
Its not a proper computer, more like android phone in laptop skin with some modded linux things added
It depends on what you want to do, but in general I wouldn't recommend the mini. It just seemed a good fit for this situation. But, if you do want to go with a Mini, the RAM in the Mini is still upgradable, so you don't need to pay Apple's price for that. The SSD is not upgradable, but Thunderbolt SSD's are are so fast that you're better off using an external drive for that now if you do need to upgrade. The only thing that I think you would most likely need upgrading on the base model mini is the CPU. The i3 they put in the base model is a bit weak for doing audio and video stuff. I'd upgrade that one notch.
If you end up needing to upgrade the mini very much, you end up in the price range of the 21" iMac. So, you might as well get the iMac. The displays in the iMacs are really incredible for the price. Upgradability on the 21" iMacs sucks though. At least on the 27" you can upgrade the RAM (I think you still can on the newest model) and the display is great.
I absolutely agree with this. Pretty much like buying a green screen terminal to use as a computer (if you are old enough to understand what that means).
