I'm giving up on the Behringer UC202. It's really noisy. Can someone recommend a simple and portable 2in 2out audio interface even better with midi in and out for an ipad? I'm looking for something cheap and not too expensive, preferably used. Was eyeing on the Audiobox by Presonus and the IK multimedia Duo. Any suggestions?
Hello, I’m using (on stage) Audient ID4. Last couple of times used the smallest from Presonus - Go. I have no reason to complain. So do the soundmen.
The Arturia MiniFuse 2 has everything you mentioned. I see only one drawback - a little bit higher round trip latency.
The Zoom U-24 (or U-44 if you want future expandability) is pretty unbeatable in its price range. Decent mic pres, MIDI in/out, nice loud headphone output, and portable to boot. I use the U-44 with the Zoom expander, giving me 4 in/4 out.
I have an Audient Evo 4 and a Presonus Studio 64c (I think that’s the number!). The former has slightly better latency performance, the latter has MIDI ports. I’d think the most “good name” interfaces are fine these days.
I have this and I am very pleased with the results I get!

Hey those new Focusrite 2i2 & 4i4 look pretty cool….
I broke the cool VU meter on my 3 year old MOTU M2, but I wrote them and they’re going to have me ship it in for a repair since I’m such a prominent iOS Musician and cool person in general. Hard to beat MOTU if you like a clean sound. Maybe I need a spare while I send it in?
Agreed.
Speaking purely from my own perspective (I can hardly speak for anybody else LoL) I think the Zoom U24 is perfect.
It’s light, and battery/usb powered. You absolutely don’t need a powered hub. I never use my iPad at a desk. I have my Mac for that kind of use… but when you want to plug a guitar, say into an iPad or drive an external synth via midi whilst recording the audio it’s ideal as I can do it all on the sofa.
I prefer using a midi+audio interface to IDAM — it makes the iPad into a ‘proper’ external synth.
I also like using my little zoom h1n. I often record things like my Cicuit directly into it rather than mess with iPads and software then copy the files across via USB to my phone or iPad. And it works as a dead cool little audio interface too so I can record directly into the iDevice. I mostly use it with my phone.
The U24 is my perfect iOS interface.
For desktop, I like Audient. Best bang for the pound for my requirements and budget.
