Ableton MIDI mapping

Been trying to figure out mapping MIDI controllers to ableton instruments and a VSTs. From what I’ve read this seems only to be possible by creating templates and mapping the midi to Lives macros, rather than global mapping that works on the fly. I then came across this intriguing quote in computer music magazine:

Anyone know how this can be done either with this controller or another?

Thanks!

That’s NKS, a native instruments system that some vst stuff supports.

I have a first generation Push and Suite 9. Any vst instrument or effect displays the first 8 parameters when opened. If there’s more then pressing a key on the top right
will go to the next 8 etc etc

I use a Max for live device on some stuff so I can organise banks for the more complex plugins.

Having Osc1, Osc2, Fltr, Env ,Lfo, Fx1, Fx2, Mxr, Etc on the top row of buttons makes navigation very easy and you can choose your own parameters.

Would highly recommend a used Push 1 to anyone already familiar with live and looking for a midi controller. Build quality is amazing and prices are really really low for what you get.

  • Ableton push user here
Well worth the money, was struggling a bit with Ableton, got a push, now I flying along,
And don't have to look at laptop much once I get in the flow
    Small outlay for big rewards

Ableton definitely comes alive with Push2,
    Great pads, encoders, display.
    Integration like no other.
Also try Touchable Pro iOS app very deep control.
If that’s not enough, add any midi controller and this bit of software
    https://isotonikstudios.com/product/clyphx-pro/
It requires learning a basic language
But you can do just about anything you can think of, in many ways. Even control so much of Ableton just by the way you name the clips. It’s outstanding and the forum the dev runs is very active and supportive.

Thanks for the info. I thought it might be something a bit more advanced than the way Push handles it. I guess my goal is to have close to one knob per function, rather than scrolling through different banks of parameters, but I know this is pretty much impossible. I just bought this (now discontinued) Livid controller: http://lividinstruments.com/products/alias8/ which I'm aiming to map all my synths to. You can cycle through different banks shown on the LED. I guess I'm after the hands on nature of hardware with the convenience of software! :D

It's very easy, map 8 from this pack is what I use. You can have unlimited parameters, just have to set up once.

Not got Touch OSC, but am interested. What does the template do?! :)

  • This is just 2 of the 10 pages of controls
    Mostly workflow type actions
So many! And it really shows How many options you have with ClyphxPro,any controller and Abelton
Be sure to look into the Bindings and Keys add ons for ClyphxPro as well.
    Sincerely
    A grateful user

I have looked at Map8 before but not really understood its 'USP'. What is it giving you beyond cycling through the 'configured' parameters (attached) on the VST? does it retain MIDI CC mapping?

If you have Push and load an Ableton Synth like Operator, everything is neatly labelled and you can select the area of the synth you want to tweak.

Map8 lets you do the same for any vst. Want 16 categories, load 16 map8 devices. Group all these and the vst together, hit save on the rack and it’s setup forever.
