Question about Earbud Microphones
If an app doesn’t have an option to use the device internal mic over the inline headphone mic, is there any way to make it use the internal mic?
Is there an iOS Setting to control this?
I looked, but it seems like a no-go.
Comments
Can you load the app as an audio destination in Audiobus, apeMatrix or AUM?
I tried in AUM and AB, but both of those switch the mic automatically when I plug/unplug the earbuds. If the earbuds are plugged in, both apps switch from internal to headset mic, with no apparent way to control it.
OK, if it's specifically about using the built-in microphone over the headset microphone then I guess that's not possible at all. At least I've never seen it on a stock iOS version.
If the app has the option built into the settings, it is possible.
FieldScaper has this option, but LoopField does not.
I was hoping for an overall iOS system setting to control it, but I can’t find it.
I figure if it does exist, one of the resident geniuses would know of it.
You just need an adapter that converts the three pole headphone jack to a two pole jack without the mic connector. I bought a couple of these on amazon a long time ago for this purpose, but it seems they’re no longer available. But any extender cable with only stereo female to stereo male will work.
If you have lightening earbuds, that’s a different story.
I dug out an old stereo extender cable, and it does indeed work!
Thank you. 😊
There is a trick though.
You have to plug the extender into the device first, then plug the headphone into the extender.
If the headphones are connected when you plug in the extender, somehow the device still sees the headset mic and will switch over to it.
Must be some mystery of electricity coming into play.
No mystery - just the sense logic of what's plugged in.
With headset first, the headset mic is detected - with the extender there is no ring for the external mic, so it cannot be detected
It's a regular 3 pin extender, not specific to IOS.
I'm still using TwistedWave as it allows me to monitor using the earbuds and also allows selection of which mic to use for the recording.
It's a standard Apple API that allows the input selection so I do not understand why AudioBus, AUM, AudioShare etc do not implement it!
If anyone cares to bug developers to implement proper input selection here's a link to Apples documentations about input selection...

It is detected if the headphones are connected to the adapter first, though.
Even if the adapter is a regular 3 pin extender.
While plugging in there may be mechanical 'transistions' of temporary connections...
ps: but the detection is in fact a pretty strange process (as experienced when connecting DIY stuff)

It would certainly be interesting to find out more details. There must be something else going on.
