recording with Auria Pro- how to silence midi tracks

My project has numerous midi instruments, including piano, hi-hat, snare, kick, bass and guitar. I want to play the guitar midi instrument on my keyboard, and play along with my other tracks already recorded so I can get a better idea of what I want the guitar part to sound like. But as is, when I touch a key, all the midi instruments sound, unless I have them muted. But if mute everything except the midi guitar track then the only thing I hear when playing back the project is the midi guitar. So, how do I hear all midi tracks, but only send midi input to the guitar track? Does this even make sense?

You need to turn off the midi input on channels where you don't want the instrument to listen to the incoming midi. You probably have each of your midi tracks still set to listen to incoming midi.

  • If I turn off the midi instrument, then that silences the midi track on play back. Remember, I want to hear each track but I only want one track to respond to midi input from my keyboard.

No that's not what @espiegel123 said - he said turn off MIDI input for the channels you don't want to be affected by the keyboard.

  • Sorry, I’m still new to Auria. Where do I turn off midi input?

As @richardyot pointed out, I didn't mean turn off the instrument.

Every midi track has a popup that lets you choose what incoming MIDI, the channel listens to. It also has a popup that lets you send the track's MIDI elsewhere. If a channel/track is set to listen to incoming MIDI from a controller, then any notes from the controller will trigger the track's instrument.

After you have recorded a track, you usually want to set the track to ignore incoming MIDI. You have to popup the track's setup window to do it.

By default, MIDI tracks are set to listen to all incoming MIDI.

Hopefully, the upcoming update will make the input assignment more convenient.

  • where specifically is that popup located? Is that the input matrix?

Tapping on the FX button for any mixer channel pops up the track’s configuration window. For MIDI tracks, there is a MIDI control tab with the track’s MIDI settings.

If you haven’t done so, I’d recommend spending 30-45 minutes looking through the manual. Auria Pro is very powerful, but some of its conventions are not obvious but are explained in the docs.

Thanks, found it. Still, it sure would be more convenient if there was a button for this purpose on each track on the mixer page. Of course, I realize there is a limited amount of user interface space and decisions have to be made about which kinds of buttons are placed on each track.

I agree that the UI for this needs improvement, it's still evolving. In previous versions you had to record-enable the track for MIDI input to become active, which mean that it was a one-click solution. Unfortunately many new users found this behaviour confusing and hard to discover, so it was changed to the current solution, which IMO is probably worse :)

The problem stems from the fact that in most iOS DAWs MIDI input is set to the currently selected track, but in Auria you don't really select tracks in the same way (and in fact you can't select tracks in the mixer view), so it's a question of finding an elegant UI solution for this problem. A MIDI Matrix might work, but that's probably too big an endeavour.

  • In any case, I've found that the effort to learn Auria has been worth it! Also found the Linked-In series for Auria Pro to be quite helpful. First month's membership is free which gives ample time to run through the videos.

I recommend contacting the developer and mentioning that you wish that one could turn a track’s MIDI input on/off from the mixer without menu/dialog diving.

The problem would be easily solvable by adding a widget on the mixer for each MIDI channel that turns midi input on/off for that channel.
