SSD / external drives and iPadOS anyone having issues?

Hello there guys. hope you are all doing well.
I have this strange thing going on for quite a while now.
Basically when I was on IPadOS initial beta, I could connect my ssd to my iPad Pro 11 and it would sometimes work and sometimes not.
But when the official release come out, it stopped working. I thought i needed a powered usb c adapter, purchased one but still no luck. The SSD would blink like its working but no sign of it in Files App, but thumb drives do work with and without powered adapter.
The strange thing is that the SSD works on my iPhones without issue.
I’ve also been to an Apple store and tested with their USB c adapter without any luck.
We tried connecting to an iPad mini with lighting but no luck.
Seems there is an issue with iPadOS not recognising some SSD.
Anyone having issues with external drives?

  • Probably not your issue since it works with your iPhone, but I do know when there are folders with a large number of files (somewhere higher than about 2000), iOS chokes trying to read those folders.

Also, I've seen that when I disconnect a drive of any type from the device then plug it into my PC, the drive always shows up as needing to be repaired. The repair doesn't find any errors, but it comes up every time. This happens even though I'm careful to be certain no write activity can be going on when I remove the drive from the device. Apple isn't setting some bit somewhere that tells the PC the drive was removed cleanly.

Sorry ... that was a sidetrack. The suggestion I have is related though: You might want to try plugging that SSD into a computer and checking it for errors.

Lastly, NTFS formatted drives will not work with iOS. If you're sure it works with the iPhone then this isn't the issue, but it's worth mentioning.

I plugged in an external HD and it showed up on iOS13. Copied a file / did a happy dance. Later I plugged the drive back in and it would not show up.... ever again. I plugged it into my windows machine and it had to fix errors on it, which it did and it then read fine on the windows machine. It still will never read on the ipad again.

It’s really strange that you having issues when you plug it into windows.
    I’ve never had this issue.
One thing you could try is to partition the drive using Mac with GUID partition system, that might help

    same thing I’m facing.
With the beta OS, it would sometimes only show up on my iPad if I connected it to my iPhone first.
Just can’t understand why it works with the iPhones an no luck on any iPadOS
