Need iOS App that can velocity switch and mute from external MIDI controller
I’ve been lurking for a bit and can’t find an answer, so this is my first post. Background: Drummer who has extensive experience with electronic drums from Roland and Yamaha. I have some basic familiarity with iOS apps and have messed with Gadget 2, BeatHawk, SampleTank, AutoPad, ShowOne, a few others. I have an iPad mini4 and iPhone 8.
I use a Yamaha DTX multipad frequently with my drum setup. It works well for my needs, but can be overkill and difficult to position in my drum setup.
I recently got a BopPad and that would be great for my setup sometimes. I’ve used it for transport control, but I’m looking for an App that can replicate what I can do with my multipad. For instance: A timpani sample that has 3 velocity layers for realistic expression, then I could mute it by pressing on the Boppad with my hand. Boppad can't do velocity switching, only sending a note number and velocity, but can send CC pressure data. Also it would have to be able to import samples.
Is there an iOS App that could do this for me? It doesn’t look possible with my current Apps (like Bilbao in Gadget). I’d like it to be something simple if possible, rather than a DAW like App that I’m only going to use a small part of and have to deal with a difficult interface.
Thanks

It sounds like you need a combination. A velocity-layered sampler such as AudioLayer (or the sampler in NanoStudio 2 which also has velocity layers. And Mozaic or Streambyter to remap your cc to something that will cut the note short.
I wonder if a flexible workaround would be two triggers set up as a choke group, with the second either a silent or a tail sample. Roland V-drum cymbals are like that. There’s a second trigger on the rim for the choke.
Hi,
I also use a multi12 in the left side "aux snare" position with my ekit and my ac kit. With a couple of 2 zone rubber pads around the kit.. Great setup if I may say!
I have an iPad and an audio4+ audio/midi interface on the same stand as the dtx.
I can recommend looking at bm3, a freaking great sampler....and mozaic or streambyter. You might not even need mosaic or SB . with the cc that the bop puts out routed to the adsr envelope in beatmaker.
I'll try and do it to see if there's any pitfalls w that specific setup if you would like. Should be doable.

Edit...actually,the bm3 thing would beat the dtx mute because bm3 could respond to a range of mute (cc's) where the dtx is on/off. 127 or zero.
Thank you all for your helpful insights
How would you map pressure CC to mutes in BM3?
By controlling envelope release? And does the envelope follow changes while a note is playing? If so, how would you reset the release to its default length after a mute?
Hi,
Having not done it, that's why I said I would try. I have done some snares and kiks.......acoustic type..with velocity switching. Worked well. The bm3 ui was OK...not like a Roland s770 with a monitor :-) but not pain full at all.
If your sure bm3 macros alone can't do it, then would SB or mosaic make it so?
I do feel that the sampler part for me would be bm3.
Maybe using note on/off? With SB or mosaic converting the cc's to note off for the timp note/CH?
A Streambyter or Mozaic script could definitely do that I think, it's just a matter of designing and writing it.
Sounds like Beat Maker 3 might be worth a try. I know a lot of you guys are music app iOS experts, but if I have to use multiple apps and write scripts (???), I can assure you I'm not doing that.
Maybe someday someone will make a great app that will replace a Roland V-drum type module. That is the day I hope for.
