Received a new iPad 2, what to do with it?
As was mentioned in a couple of earlier threads, I was awarded a new (really?) iPad 2 16 GB for online training at work. It is still sitting on a table unopened after a week or so.
I already have an iPad 3 64 GB, iOS 6.1.3 so this new prize is somewhat of a let down. Best Buy, WalMart, and others have a trade in process which is only $155 maximum for a new iDevice. That is for a "good" working iPad 2 but no extra value in an unopened box. I do want to upgrade to a Mini Retina since I lost my iPod Touch in a vehicle crash but not sure of the best way to proceed.
I really dislike eBay, Craig's List, etc. for trying to sell it. Just asking for opinions here on what I should do with this 4 generation old device. I thought about opening it and updating to iOS 7 just to see what the fuss was about and thus use the 5 or 6 iOS 7 only apps that I have purchased. That may be moot since it is only 16 GB.
I don't really need an extra touch device to be used as a controller or other uses so that is not in question.
Advice is surely welcome.
Thanks.

I would do what Simon said or keep them both and wait for an ipad with more ram this fall as the current air & mini have reportedly less ram available than the ones you have already (the 3 at least anyway) and in terms of multi tasking performance the ram maxes out way before the CPU on my air....in my use cases using the likes of Auria with IAA bm2 sequencing etc....
That said if you have korg gadget.....well it runs great on the air and I haven't maxed it out yet.....and the air is a lot lighter which helps me to use it for longer periods.
Or you could just buy a new air and give the 2 & 3 to your kids/partner...:)
give it to a loved one for sure... they'd be stoked
If you use external controllers and get frustrated with some of the - shale we syay - less flexible MIDI denizens (gobble up all ports so MidiBridge cannot be used to map CC messages, for example), you could do what I do and use the 2 - with current iOS, fdont upgrade - and run all your controllers into that first for message mapping etc, then run the out of that into your newer iPad that makes the music. I use a pair of the el cheapo HDE MIDI-USB interfaces from Amazon to do that, with a pair of MIDI female to female adapters.

Karmic advice you should take.
I know you said you don't like ebay but your best bet would be to keep it sealed and sell it. The more you wait the more the price will gradually come down. Clearly if you feel that ipad 3 is cramping your style due to lack of power then sell both and get air. Ab2 will definitely require the best hardware you can get but even then I don't think we'll be able to go all that crazy because of the ram bottle neck. I can see neither of your iPads coping with ab2 amazingly well, I remember my ipad 2 choking with 2 biggish apps line animoog and neosoul keys running together and ipad 3 isn't faster afaik.
Here's a possible option of what you can do with it!
Where do you live?
Thanks for the opinions. I really was hoping to get a new device out of my good fortune but it seems the Air and Mini Retina are red headed step children like my Ipad 3. Hoped a new 2 GB device was coming soon but probably not until fall.
It is not heavy enough to be a boat anchor :-) . A non idevice friend may be interested enough to buy it but I'd feel kinda bad after showing him all the apps on my 64 GB unit that would not fit on the 16 GB unit.
@Audiojunkie, I reside in SE Alabama. Keep off my lawn :-) .
I don't think the iPad2 will even run iOS6, let alone 7. Sell it FAST
It runs iOS 7 smoother then the Air at the moment.
Just give it to someone who doesn't have a tablet, I gave my iPad 2 away.
.
I gave my iPad 2 to a good friend whose six year old granddaughter promptly Bogarted it and uses it every single day for education and fun. That makes me feel good.

That too I'm sure. But the UI graphics runs like syrup on the Air. A very simple, but obvious example, is opening up a screenshot on some app in the AppStore and rotate your Air, it's a slideshow (whereas on iPad 2 it's smooth as butter). That's just one example, there are graphics and UI issues abound on the Air. Most annoying right now, is the slooow scrolling in Gadget (courtesy the iOS UI rendering). Hopefully most will be fixed with 7.1.

Of course it will, what are you talking about?
An iPad2 will get you pretty far- Audiobus, a couple synths and an effect, simulatanously- and I have no issues with iOS 7.
I have an ipad mini which is the equal to an Ipad 2 and Ive been using IOS7 and many different audio apps with ZERO problems. Either I'm the only guy on the planet using this thing with no issues, or people are blowing its shortcomings out of proportion. My current main apps are Gadget, Animoog, and Cubasis, but I use many more with no problems.
Now sure, there are limitations with a lesser ipad, like CPU power, but as long as you use it knowing those limitations, there aren't a lot of problems that can't be worked around.
My air works fine, I am mixing auria sessions with no problem now.
"Shortcomings" are definitely being blown out of proportion. I mixed half of my album on my ipad2, and learned how to use it to accomplish what I needed. As Louis CK said, this stuff is amazing (he was speaking about people complaining about their cell phones, but same deal).
Ipad 2 here with little problems ( outside Auria that is). You just can't leave a bunch off apps running, when you are done with it, end it. It is the best value (Ipad2) for music making right now IMHO. That is until the next ipad comes out, Air pro or something is what people are calling it.
If you are in the Market for a new tablet, hold off untill more is know about the latest Ipad.
DDR3? Preasure sensitive interface? Thumb print scanner (boo)? These are the speculations circulating the net. Of course, apple ainght sayin nuttin! Maybe the rise of Android's forthcoming low latency driver will force their hand.
Or maybe I'm wrong.
I'm on ipad3 (same cpu with ipad2) with iOS7. I can't complain with the performance but sometimes it gets laggy ,so my main concern is if it handles AB2. I recommend selling both ipad2 and mini and get a used ipad4 until next ipad with more ram arrives. But if you decide to sell them ,do it NOW!
