Ableton Push vs ...

Hello friends. I've recently purchased Ableton and am looking forward to the upcoming mountain to climb. I've been doing some research on the Push/Launchpad business. I know that I'd love a Push 2, but also have a Maschine MK3.

It seems from my reading online that the integration between the Maschine and Ableton is challenging. Would be great if that were not the case, and I'm open to hearing that it isn't.

I'm open to the Launchpad but seems that it's designed for live work and that the Push 2 buries it in Abelton functionality. If using purely Ableton then get the Push. Seems to be the concensus.

My goal with this whole schmear is to get my work done faster and more efficiently. I'm not much into sound design, mainly tweak other's work with presets.

The questions are I guess, if you were in my shoes would you get the Push 2 or try to get the Maschine to work within Ableton? Or go for the Launchpad? Or ... or ... or ...

Either way, look for a trade post up here soon. Synths for "Push 2" or "something else".
(I did see other posts from back a bit on all of this but thought that I should start a new discussion).

  • Being iOS user for me Launchpad Pro / LaunchKey is the way to go. If it's only for desktop use then Push 2 is the winner.

  • If you're serious about Ableton, nothing beats the Push 2. There's a reason you see videos of people with just a Push 2 and the computer is out of sight.

The only downside to the Push is that it's Ableton only. So if you're DAW agnostic it doesn't make sense, but the Push 2 is so good that it makes you want to stick with Ableton.

That said, I've been deliberating a lot about getting a Maschine. I have Komplete Ultimate and some other NKS plugins so I'd really like an NKS "remote" now that I'm using a Roland 88 key controller over my NI S61 Mk2. I'm really hoping that NI's new vision will be one common platform for KK and Maschine and will have better DAW integration, but it doesn't sound like they're fast on the software front, based on user satisfaction on their forum.

  • many thanks @TheDubbyLabby and @Liquidmantis .

Are you stateside Mantis? Are you using Ableton now? Have you read up on the Maschine integration?

  • An amazing iOS solution is Touchable 3. Worth checking with people that have tried both

Yeah, I'm in the US. I "use" Ableton but I'm just a novice dabbler.

I haven't looked too much into the Maschine integration, other than to see it's a similar process to KK:
    https://support.native-instruments.com/hc/en-us/articles/360000605109-How-to-Set-Up-the-MASCHINE-MK3-Integration-for-Ableton-Live

In which case it's nice but not nearly as tightly coupled as a Push.

How about Touchable Pro? Pretty mixed reviews on app store - if that tells the tale, that is.

Just learned that this is by the dev of ModStep? One of the best apps, that's enough for me.

  • Well you already have Maschine as it is, so I think it makes sense to at least try and get that working first before you worry about possibly needing something else. Quite a few people on the NI forums seem to like the maschine control of Live, so it's not totally out there as an option.

Excellent point. I was just reading alot of problems with the integration. I will def give it a go. Thanks!

Get Touchable Pro in the meantime. I think you’ll find it’s integration with Ableton the best there is on iOS.

I love using it when i launch Ableton on the laptop. Mac user here though so I’m not sure what platform you’re on.

Yep it’s the “pro” I meant. It’s killer. (I haven’t used any of the Pushes, but Touchable Pro is really a blast)

  • you can control ableton with anything, but I don't think there is anything out there better than push to do so

Got it. I'm pretty sure this app may be in my future.

Just use a cable to connect your iPad to your Mac. USB-C or Lightning depending on your iPad model. They have a setup video on the Touchable site. You install the touchable server on your Mac, install a helper app for touchable and you’re off.

Given that you’ve already got the iPad, touchable pro is a bargain to end all bargains. I don’t have push but I think it’s feature for feature a Push unto itself (except it’s not hardware of course)

  • Thanks all! All of this has been a great help.
