According to Eventide, voices A and C are panned hard right and B and C hard left. “This is fixed and cannot be changed”

While you may get nice spread by doing that, it would be nice to pan two voices half left/right (if you are using all four), or pan wherever you want depending on how your mix is.

That’s a silly limitation, if they’ve gone with stereo path might have just as well given us the option to pan.

I have bought this object and am happily thinking what I can do with it (plenty), but I REALLY already hate the hard pan/no choice thing. Don;t know whether these guys have ever shown any flexibility/listen to their punters, but please.....

If you haven't, you should send an email to Eventide -- messages sent directly tend to carry more weight than messages on forums where feature feedback is concerned.

This is the same as the Quadravox algorithm in H9, right?

Yes, QVox iOS App = Quadravox H9 Algorithm.

The name was changed to QVox in order to differentiate from the Quadravox desktop plugin, which offers much more versatility per voice.

Can someone how has QVox and Discord and/or other pitch shifters comment on the relative quality of the pitch shifting?

I'd be interested too. Discord has three different algorithms so it might be interesting to compare them with different types of sounds.

Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Laurie Anderson , Brian Eno and Prince were among early adopters of Eventide hardware.

This is back in the day when a single rack cost about the same price as a nice house and car.

Cocteau Twins, Squarepusher and Sigur Ros are other notable (ab)users.

On that note I will exit this thread and enjoy some sonic bliss with this QVox thing.

Was the most requested algorithm on here by far so thanks to all at Eventide for listening!!!

I have an H9 Max and it doesn’t have Qvox. It has Quadravox which looks almost the same. Anyone have any idea what the differences are?

This is a direct port from the H9 but we couldn't call it Quadravox because we have a desktop plug-in with the same name which IS different (more features such as the ability to choose panning and specific delay for each voice, this version and the H9 have a fixed panning and the delays are staggered based on Delay D.)

    Thanks @Orville for clarifying.

  • I think the hard pan is due to it originally being an algorithm for guitars (not stereo sources). Its a really fun creative tool though so if you can get past that, you'll find some unique ways to add it to your compositions.

I've not tested deeply yet but does it work with stereo input or does it do a 'mono mix' before it starts to do it's magic and pan the result? (I'll test later by panning the input before the plug-in and then add a stereo->mono cpnversion and feed it thru Infected Mushrooms Wider).

I go mental when speaking thru the plug-in :D

For stereo input, left goes into A/C, right into B/D.

Hello and do you have any idea what the chances are of having user-control of all panning within Qvox / might this be a candidate change within an update?

  • @Samu said:

Need to try that too, cracks me up, SOLD!

Don’t know if I can trust the judgment of a man who voluntarily wears a needle in his eye.

  • Was hoping some of the FX could make some “darker” vox sounds

Just in case anyone wants to do similar stuff with Discord 4,

ooh, thats some magical stuff happening. I don't want to distract from the Eventide app, but would love to hear more about this if you start another thread. :) :)

    Good idea.

Rs2000 demonstration of Discord persuaded me to get it
when I was designing a guitar tone that I had in mind.

  • Re the hard panning; I've found a couple solutions that work okay for me in AUM. Use 2 instances of QVox with same preset; AC in one channel and BD in the second channel. With BD switched off in the first channel and AC switched off in the second. Drop a post effect AUM Stereo to Mono in each channel and pan accordingly. You could do it with 4 instances too. My preferred quick and easy solution though, is to use just one instance of QVox and drop in a post effect AUM Mid/Side Balance to bring the pairs of shifted voices closer to the centre of the stereo field. Crude but it softens the hard pan effect...

Could you just add a PAN to the effects bus (built in AUM) and smash it all the way to one side or another? Then record and load the file.

  • I like the thinking here @rcf

I’d be genuinely surprised if Eventide didn’t lift the hard-pan on this one.

  • edited December 2019

I would much rather have the other 40 something algorithms available in the AppStore. This is a direct H9 port, not a beta and it’s one that a lot of us have been wanting. Very clever implementation has been used to fit multiple choice options into one panel.

The desktop version is amazing and offers precise control over the harmonised voices. 30 day test drive available.

There’s an 8 voice version out there in vst world, haven’t felt the need to go that far (yet)

Use of AUM will get more control of harmonised voices in the stereo field, @rcf has provided clear instructions already.

  • Hard panning is putting me off as well. I like to mess with my pans.

Yes, I think the pan would give you pretty much the same result as the stereo to mono, which also has a pan control. At the moment, the AUM mid/side is sufficient for my needs; I'm able to focus the pitch changed voices a little more towards centre stage.

  • I knew what this does, what it sounds like, and was acutely aware that I have never been a fan of pitch shifty/octave-y things, no matter how good they are. I bought it.

  • 😆 same with mono synths

Thanks for the info, good to know. I have the Octavox desktop plugin, love the H9 algo, and I’ll likely grab this one some time too. I’ve done the same with UltraTap and Blackhole. Thanks, and keep em coming! Plus more H9 algos would be very appreciated.

I'd be interested too. Discord has three different algorithms so it might be interesting to compare them with different types of sounds.

the quality of QVox is superior in sound, even clean/no post-processing. the tracking is superb. the sound is reminiscent of the h3000 d/se, but without the sound of the preamp circuit and the converters. from memory, the tracking is better with QVox.

i have compared QVox pitch shifting and Discord modern only. when i have a moment i'll test the vintage and granular if you'd like. it wont be much of a comparison though. ( i do like the artifacts of those algo's though ).

i've mostly used guitar, and guitar/ebow when comparing.

  • Qvox can also be a lot of fun on SFXs, I made this video yesterday fooling around with various ones!
