Hi Canister, sure, the Roland A49 has slightly smaller keys than most synths .. they’re not mini keys .. just ever so slightly smaller, so if you have big hands that might be an issue, for me I have small hands so I really like it .. its a solid board for what it is, it’s fast and the pitch/mod lever smooth .. it’s a good little soloing keybed and a good basic little controller .. I’m running that whole room with it right now as I enjoy being able to kick back on the couch vs sitting in the computer chair all day. They also make it in black as you probably know, I chose white to kinda go along with the iPad and the Radias.
Yeah that’s a Novation SL61mkII in the other room .. a good action but lousy controller unless your running Windows XP and an old version of the software lol. I hear ya on not being able to get to a store to try em out, the past 7 years I’ve pretty much been house bound not able to get out due to health issues, so both my Novation SL61mkII and Roland A49 I bought without ever having tried either from Amazon so that if they didn’t gel with me it’d be a no hassle return. Funny thing though .. my Roland RD-700gx I actually spent time in a store with before buying .. but a week after I had it at home my hands were literally broken (tendonitis) from it’s ridiculous heavy action (heavier than my folks actual Steinway grand piano lol) I thought it felt great when I was at Guitar Center so go figure. Amazon is our best friend when buying gear these days I find 😬 Cheers from So.Cal.

Yep feels nicer than any keybed I’ve fingered and sounds glorious too!

OMG, too many to name, and for decades. A near constant rotating line up of every synth, sampler, sequencer and drum machine imaginable. Literally. In fact sometimes I forget I had owned a certain synth only to buy it and remember I once did! Nowadays I'm in scale-down mode. My goal is to get it down to like one or two synths + an ipad and the Cirklon. Chances are it won't happen
@cloudswimmer
Thanks for the detailed reply. I might give it a spin. I've a cheap cme at the mo. It's pants. Resently I've had a play of an alesis v49 and a komplete a49 and found them to be pretty stiff. I sold a blofeld a few years back without realising that keybed was propably as good as I'll find. Live n learn.
I would like a piano type keybed but all the hammer action keyboards seem to be 88 keys...too big and expensive.
You'd be incredibly hard pressed to find a four-voice polyphonic Moog (not paraphonic) for the price of an A4. The A4 takes some getting used to with the page-based programming but I think it's probably the best bang for your buck analog around. The four voices can be any combination of four discreet voices up to 4-voice poly with 'smart' methods of dynamically moving in between those extremes.
Then you add the effects, sequencer, CV tracks, sound locks... I mean, I could prolly whine for a long while about things I wish it did but for the money (especially used mk1 versions) it seems like the analog to beat.
That said, Moog Matriarch is my current lust target. Patch memory is a really nice thing though!
How could you not include 'Fireplace' on your list?? I just wanna spend an evening with your mother-96 and a crackling fire.
I've played a Nektar P6 (61k) lately and I found the keyboard action quite good. There's also the P4 with 49 keys. You might try one at your local dealer.
Another great keyboard was in the KORG Prologue which doubles as a nice analog'ish synth
But real hammer action?
The only baby-size hammer action keyboard I've seen by now though is the Roland RD-64.
Yes, you can run external inputs through the internal FX. And automate it too.
@rs2000
that for the suggestions. i think i'll probably give roland a49 a whirl. can't afford the other gear.
i'm not really a fan of the 1 lfo on the prologue, although the keybed does feel a lot better than my cme! hmm analogue.. think i'm a digital man now. i like the complexity of them
i'd like to check out a digitone at some point
my dad had a rs2000
Sure, the Prologue is too expensive just for the keybed
If you like the Digitone, LFOs and deep modulations then make sure you check out the 3 FM oscillators with 3 operators each inside NS2's Obsidian. Add multiple LFOs and a very deep mod matrix plus easy automation (p-locks) of macro knobs that each can control multiple parameters plus sample-based and wavetable oscillator options and you have your own synthesis heaven.
Obsidian completely replaced the Digitone for me. The 8 macro knobs and XY pad are almost as fun to use as the hardware knobs.
That sounds intriguing. Maybe I should give Obsidian a closer look. I've rolled my own Digitone using KQ Dixie instances in AUM with Rozeta LFOs per instance and StepBud for plock sequencing.
KQ Dixie is strong and the FM core is more powerful but because Obsidian is much more fun to use, I only use Dixie with my favorite DX7 sounds collection, basically a preset FM machine.
By combining more than one simpler FM oscillator, I also find sound design easier in Obsidian and of course you can always throw in Dixie for the original DX sounds.
Lovely setup! However, if it were me and I was playing that keyboard towards the window, and I turned around quick, I just know I'd knock my Grandmother into the fire! Oh god, the humanity!!!!!!!
Sweet list! Got a VF-11 and KP2+KP3 too, the pre-iPad touch devices
And trying to keep the Nord Modular editor running on VMware Win and an old PPC Powerbook, got two Micro Modulars mainly for effect purposes any physical modeling experiments.

That’s a nice rig man 👍 Indeed no shame in Behringer. I’ve owned some big name synths over the years .. Jupiter 8, OBXa, Minimoogs, etc., and I now own a Behringer Model D and two Deepmind 12’s .. it’s good stuff, wish they’d hurry up on that OBXa clone 😬
I’ve been moving back towards desktop software so I’ve gotten rid of everything except my Analog Keys, Digitakt and Digitone. I do have a Blofeld that needs some soldering done, then it’s prolly gonna get sold. Oh and a JDXI, rarely used nowadays but ima hang on to that lil groovebox. I’m also trying to sell a Roland A01/K01 or whatever it’s called, but it’s the least popular boutique box (even tho it has Bluetooth midi letting you hook up midi controllers to iOS via Bluetooth etc), been trying to get rid of that one for a year
I have fun with some of Teenage Engineering’s Pocket Operators. Really fun to play around with and just jam. All of my Lo-fi stuff was done on the PO-33 K.O.
I have a couple Pocket Operators and a Yamaha Portasound that I found for like $5. I’m a little poor for hardware

My most recent hardware acquistions are:
1) Ensoniq SQ80 - I paid 100 usd to a kind old gentleman who would not take more. Pretty much in mint shape. The disk drive even works! I love the sounds in this thing. Nice filter. I even like alot of the presets. Keyboard is fab.
2) Just did a trade for a Roland Alpha Juno 1 (traded Novation MiniNova). It's somewhat "loved" but man it has a sound I really dig. Big, beefy and retro. Sort of like me.
Currently I am using
Korg Triton (but two buttons have stoped working and the screen is fading)
Behringer Odyssey
Behringer MS-1
Roland SE-O2 OMG this is an amazing synth!!!!!!!!!! Pretty much always my first go to that ability to store and recall and fantastic sounds definitely my Best Buy of the decade!
Roland TR-8 for drums but I just built two stand up percussion stations to go with it
