    What's NFM? :)

    This one I believe ( I don't own it yet) https://apps.apple.com/us/app/nfm/id1247473972

I'd say that Obsidian (NS2) is the FM synth that comes closest to the Digitone, both in usability and in endless modulation possibilities. You have 3x3 FM operators per instance and virtually unlimited tracks.

I don't own a Digitone so I can't speak to how close Obsidian is but damn, I love the OBS FM oscillator. I think it's the most underrated part of NS2. Or maybe just under talked about? The manual entry for it could prolly use more detail.

    Why I  it:

    • Each operator can use one of 15 different waveforms (vs sine alone).
    • Each of the algorithm connection points (feedback amount and level) have their own full envelopes with velocity and key tracking for both level and time.
    • In addition to the internal envelopes, you can point the rest of Obsidian's modulators (5x LFO, 5x ENV, knobs...) at any individual algorithm component
    • You can stack 3 different FM oscillators in the same patch
    • Or you can mix it with other oscillator types (samples, VA..)

On that last bit, I love how easy it is to mix different oscillator types in Obsidian but kinda wonder if Matt undersold the power of the beast by not having full dedicated UIs for each oscillator type (ala Gadget).

    Still... I want me a Digitone. :)

This should nudge me into trying out Obsidian's FM chops.

Wish I could midilearn more knobs in NS2 though.

  • Some great Digitone tips can be picked up in this vid too.

It's interesting this one because Cuckoo chats with Ess, one of the designers of the DN, so there's an inside scoop.

  • Sounds like an awesome fm synth!
Wish it was available as a separate app.
    Maybe one day 🤞🏼

  • This dude has some lovely Digitone jams on his channel.

He just released a sound design video today for the DN. Some great tips...

@StudioES the Digitone cannot currently serve as an audio interface for iOS. Just works as a 2 Channel Analog audio IN/Out interface.

It would be great if they enabled audio over USB like the Heat.

Still a few things I’m trying to learn about the Digitone myself.

Like what does this square icon next to some sounds mean?

EDIT: just got that word that this icon is when you use in a Sound-Lock. Confirmed it with test. :)

  • Just a noodle with the Digitone and Polyphase app that turned out nice.

  • How do you get out the 4 internal (synth) tracks out via midi (without to copy them to midi tracks)?
    Thanks!

You don't. You need to copy them.

  • :/ Thanks for bad news ;)
