Making your own film score on an iPad

edited December 2019 in Other

I saw a commercial about a "Masterclass for film score"- by the legendary Hans Zimmer. And he mention that the ideas are in your head and that you can make the filmscore on an iPad!
I don´t know if it was a god ad that lured me in to wanna take the class or if they just put those words into Hans mouth that it was possible to make a complete film score on a iPad. Is that really possible?!

this is score-like music made entirely in iPad in Nanostudio 2 ... make your own opinion ;-)

his workflow is to sample apps like Beathawk, iSymphonic, Garageband, Sampletank and Korg Module and then from those samples he creates instruments in Obsidian

btw. question form is broken, it is not possible to select "yes" ;-)

    How is this done?

    (I’m a music making noob)

That’s perfect! Thanks for the link. 😊👍

  • ^ amazing he did all the cues without any sync, just looping stuff on his iPhone.

  • ^ much easier in software that supports picture sync, hence my comment.

In what is a Film Score different to any other piece of music?

it has significantly bigger composition complexity than most of other musical genres (especially than electronic music) - same goes to so called "classic , or orchestral music"

plus when you write real score for real movie (not just track which is supposed to sound like movie score but it is not used in any real movie) you often need write it in sync with movie scenes, so music reflects dramatic changes on screen

But yes, those are no reasons why it would be not possible to do such music on iPad.. just the sync part with video would be complicated ...

  • If you can time code sync the iPad to a video editor i guess you can.

  • I remember reading on Reddit sometime back that Masterclass courses from Hans, Aarmin, etc are filled with BS like -

    "You can do it"
    "Keep doing it..."
    "Don't give up"

Which is actually true. It's sounds like bkah blah but if you're commited enough and you learn new stuff on daily basis, you can achieve really what you want. It's just about choosing your goals and then working hard.

I watched Deadmau5 masterclass and it was great. Revisiting some parts multiple times. What i really like on it's masterclass is, that he goes not too much technical (there is stockpile of technical tutorials on mastering, mixing, sound design, etc on YT already), but it's more about the way of thinking when make EDM music.

It was really enlightening to see how is thinking one of most talented edm musician nowadays. It helped me to move with my production forward a lot, i was really stucked somewhere for few years and this helped me with "unstucking"

I would recommend his masterclas to everybody who already have deeper knowledge aboud all basic elements of electronic music production (composition/sound design/mixing/overview) but is searching for some more general overview, something which glues together all partial knowledge areas and shows the way of thinking which leads to better creativity... It's hard to explain, but as i said, it helped me a lot unstuck and i get a lot of new inspiration and will to create music.

In other side if you're searching more for really technical information, howtos, stepbystep tutorials then probably this one isn't best choice .. i readed somewhere that Armin's tutorial goes more this technical way.
