DAW that allows mixer control with MIDI device?

I was just wondering if anyone knows of a daw in which you can control the track volume and mute with an external midi device? Basically I'd like to use this for backing tracks live and would be able to bring in additional tracks/adjust the volume of said tracks with a controller. Currently I'm using an iphone version of loopy (loopy hd is doing other things), but the iphone version of loopy on an ipad isn't the optimal solution. Thanks!

  • I don't think you will get anything that is lighter on CPU than Loopy, but as far as I know most of the iOS DAWs will do this. I have Beatmaker 2 and it can MIDI learn volume and pan for audio tracks.

I think Auria and Cubasis can do the same thing.

  • Thanks for the info, didn't realize you could do that with beatmaker 2. Unfortunately I really need the mute toggle to be mapped. I looked around cubasis quite a bit but didn't find anything about midi controlling anything in the mixer. Might just have to stick with loopy for now. Perhaps NXT will have a midi update soon to launch clips, as that is basically what I'd like to do.

just wanted to mention that Auria supports the Mackie Control protocol. DAW control deluxe if you have an MCU or a MIDI controller that can emulate this protocol.

@otem_rellik just program a button to send cc values 0 and 127 for on/off if you need a mute toggle...?

...But from your youtubes, it looks like you know a lot more about MIDI than most of us so I'll be quiet now. hope you find something that works.

  • also, I was just guessing about Cubasis... so others will have to let us know if it actually has MIDI control in the mixer.

For Auria, do you have to use the Mackie protocol or can you make any old MIDI binding work?

  • @Hmtx I don't know a whole lot about midi, just kind of tinker around until something works. The 0/127 would sort of work, but it would set the volume to max when on, which is no good. I could adjust the value to not go all the way to 127, but this will most likely be different on every backing track, so it kind of needs to be more dynamic. I'd also like to have knobs for the volume and a button for the mute toggle so that get's a little tricky if both are mapped to volume control. If regular midi bindings work in Auria I may have to finally purchase it. The midi controller I'm using for this is a launch control.

  • Regular midi bindings do not work in Auria unfortunately. Just the Mackie protocol for now.

hah, I knew there was some little problem with my 0/127 binding suggestion ;-)

and by the way, I looked a little deeper and Beatmaker 2 has exactly what you want from the mixer view. MIDI learn for each track's volume, pan, solo, mute and fx sends! =)

  • Nice, I missed that when I was in the mixer view. Fantastic, that is exactly what I need! Unfortunately I'm already using Beatmaker for drums live (through audiobus with fx) and I need the backing tracks to be dry. Might just have to find another program for drums. So, secondary question, does anyone know an app that has most of the same features as beatmakers drum pads. Most importantly, two banks worth of drum pads that one can load their own samples into and trigger with a midi controller?

  • Also, thanks for looking into the beatmaker stuff for me @Hmtx!

  • Most little slider boxes do HUI these days. Korg nanoKONTROL2 works well with Auria now, also has Solo, Mute, Transport control, and buttons that light up appropriately. $50. Just works (once you select the right patches in the nK and Auria :). Cubasis say they have more controller stuff in the works.

If you are going to do it with multiple instruments instead of a multi-track DAW you will get Volume control on each but Mute and Solo will not be so easy, or even not possible.

You might be able to do the separation of dry backings in paralell with a wet drums path using BM2 when AudioBus 2 comes out.

    Noisepad app

@otem_rellik lots and lots. Nanostudio, DM1, Funkbox, Beat Machine... All with different trade offs.

What sort of effects are you running your drums through via Audiobus? NanoStudio will cost you a little more than the others but has pretty good internal effects. Plus, BM2 kits are pretty easy to translate into NS TRG kits if you're not afraid of a text editor. A shame BM2 doesn't support IAA effects yet because you might have all of your problems solved! Or hold out of AB2 which has multiple routes (but it will require BM2 to support that, I presume).

  • Thanks for the info guys. @syrupcore, I have all the apps you mentioned and nanostudio was one of the first apps I fell in love with when I got my first ipad. Here is a video I did when I first got my quneo:

I really like that you can have different banks in beatmaker and midi learn all the triggers. My live set up is kind of chaos and always changing. Right now I have beatmaker for dums with 32 drum hits mapped across two banks and triggered with my quneo (two octaves.) Its the midi learn on the drum pads that I love about beatmaker (and the fact that I can access both banks with only an octave switch on queno). The effects I have for the drum pads are from turnado and I have some crazy stuff mapped to my quneo sliders that do weird time glitches and other more standard effects. Anywho, I'll figure something out..and then probably change it again after a couple days, haha. I appreciate the feedback!

oooh, do post us a video tinkering on your current setup please !

edit: and I have to add that I love the video above with QuNeo and NanoStudio. Nicely done. I think I saw that on Discchord last year

  • I've seen that video somewhere before. Good stuff!
