Song Of The Month Club - January 2020

SOTMC has been going now for five years straight

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material

And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine

  • My entry for this month, lyrics in the spoiler:

I try to believe in what we could achieve
If things would go our way
But fate plays its part and we are torn apart
The skies now turn to grey

I heard them say, you were made for rainy weather
And that's OK, cos you can take the pressure
You don't shelter from the storm
Hide away try to keep warm
Cos you were made for rainy weather
You were made to take the pressure

When the rain will fall we can't see far at all
And doubt will fill my day
So it seems to me that you will hopefully
    Help cast my fears away

I heard them say, you were made for rainy weather
And that's OK, cos you can take the pressure
You don't shelter from the storm
Hide away try to keep warm
Cos you were made for rainy weather
You were made to take the pressure

I like the chill ethereal vibe. I think it could use a little bit less on the high end. It also kind of feels like it’s building to something but never quite reaches it. I think this could be helped if the pad and lead faded in and out a bit more, maybe isolating the vocals and drums or just the vocals here and there might help.

Here’s my first track of the year.

Thanks for the feedback and the listen :)

Some nice and creative sample mangling in your entry, with what I presume is a sampled loop cut up and regrooved. It would maybe be nice to have a little more variety though, both in the beat (which is pretty constant) and also the samples, with maybe some different loops coming in. But other than that it's cool to hear something a little different to the usual offering.

  • @richardyot

Thanks, I’m trying to figure out the best way to add more variety to these songs. I may need to vary up the length of the samples to get a bit more creative with it. And yeah, it’s a sampled intro from a song. I chop it on my PO-33 by copying the sample on a melodic track onto a drum track. Learned this from Ricky Tinez.

  • FHTH - Carpathian Sunset (Industrial, EBM). I used Pure Acid, Poison-202 and Groove Rider GR-16 in Cubasis 2. Mixing and mastering was made in Reason 11.

There are some pretty fun and exciting passages in this one, I especially like the reaaaallllly squelchy TB303 - and generally I dislike the sound of the TB303 because it's such a cliché, but you push it so hard here it actually sounds fresh :)

The track has a good flow, with some interesting variations in the arrangement - it's probably a little long for my tastes but the overall excitement of some of the busier sections helps to make up for that.

If the PSBs' did chill out B) Vox get a bit muddy at points, and there were a couple of bum notes in the vocal but like it a lot.

Nice! some cheeky twist in the Acid line keeps interest and some nice epic string/pads... man after my own heart.. nice track ;)

  • @enc thanks for the feedback!

  • @richardyot

Nice one again Richard! You stay true to your style... You got really your own trademark sound!
Normally I don't read the comments of the others before listening to not get biased... This time I accidentally read @YourJunk s comment and when he describes that your track is going somewhere without quite reaching it, I feel completely the same... Your remember my 2 comments on your previous 2 songs? I described the feeling of desperation and uneasiness when listening to those tracks... I think you achieve this by building up some tension without resolving... I am not saying this is good or bad.. But definitely this is how your trademark sound works on me.... Leaving me a bit uneasy.. ;P
After the first chorus when this ethereal Voice sets in and then fades away again is very nice!

Solid PO 33 Sampling here! Like the subtle use of FX! Whats the sample?

Did you check out Gar Hoover on youtube? I am quite impressed what he is achieving with the PO 33

Oooh must be the Ukrainian Part of the Carpathes with all those Jim Pavlov Sounds! Nice fat techno sound man! Like!

Ahh just had a 30 seconds listen to it... This jazzy stuff is soo good to sample, but I just can't listen to the originals! I am so not feeling this music... :-P

I dig the sound design for sure. I do feel like there’s a bit of a disconnect between the primary melody and some of the additional sounds, but not sure if that lack of cohesion is intentional or not.

Hah yeah, definitely not a fan of most songs that I sample.

Just did 2 tracks this year so far... One not really worth sharing and the other is unfinished...
So I share again something this month what I made for a reddit Sampling Competiton (Flip this! Challenge) back in November... This time it was the Irving Berlin track "Always" sung by Ella Fitzgerald... Rules were to flip the sample prominently in the track, but you were allowed to use outside instruments... I took some Piano Part and her voice of course... Made all in Beatmaker 3...

Thanks - that feeling of sadness is definitely what I'm going for, so at least that's no accident :)

It's interesting though to hear that you both have a feeling of something unresolved in the music, because that is almost definitely accidental - there are harmonic and melodic cadences in the music, so technically it should resolve.

It might simply be down to the fact that the chorus uses a very low-key progression compared to the verse which uses a comparitvely "big" (and very common) sounding vi I vi V (Am C Am G), whereas the chorus uses a decidedly more melancholy (and a little less common) vi ii iii V (Am Dm Em G) so musically the chorus drops down a gear ( and uses mostly minor chords as well), which could be creating this feeling of the verse building up and then the chorus not resolving. Maybe another songwriter would have put the low-key progression in the verse rather than the chorus, and then created a more satisfying resolution. It's food for thought anyway :)

Cool mashup of the contemporary drums with the old-school jazz, it's another musical collage - the unexpected spoken word sample definitely adds another layer to this, and I love how the speech is rhythmically gelling with the underlying beat.

For me it would be nice if there was a bit more of a groove to the drums, they could settle into a jazzy shuffle for example, but the overall quirkiness of the mashup is definitely good fun.

Yeah the drums are getting a bit boring after the 6th repeat... And actually I don't remember anymore how I ended up with those trap hihats, but always trying out something new...

I like it. There are a couple moments where the drums feel just a tick off rhythm with the piano but it works with the jazzy feel.

One thing I’m noticing with these is that we all seem to have a bit of a non-traditional style. There seems to be a bit of a surreal sort of feel to all of these tracks where it almost seems like someone who doesn’t quite understand standard music structure trying to impersonate it, like an alien trying to acclimate to our culture or something.

It’s really interesting, and I hope I’m not insulting anyone there. It’s definitely not meant to be an insult. I think it’s neat to see that commonality here. There’s some experimentation that’s pretty cool.

  • No worries mate, there are no insults... Agree with the surreal touch... And I like that Alien Comparison :) And yeah actually when working with samples I do all by ear... no idea about key ;P

Actually tonight I was first time ever drawing a bassline into the piano roll ... Exciting! ;)

  • I'm back! Sorry, been gone a few months, I've been building my modular synthesizer. Here is a little ring tone I made with it a few weeks ago. Plan on getting back into the song of the month this year. Happy new year brothers.

  • @shiftsynth1

Because you wrote “Ringtone” I listened it through my mobiles speaker 😉
Yeah wouldn't call it a song, more like some ambiance... But I like that plucky bell sounds! I bought me that Mersenne Synth App 2 weeks ago because I wanted something which makes those sounds... Go on and develop this small melody! It's a very good starting point!

Could see this being in a video game or something. Like the textures for sure. I think you could develop it more if you wanted. But I also think it could stand on its own if you wanted it to.

Very nice sounding melody and texture, a great bit of sound design.

I'm a little hard to write reviews since English is not my native language. But I'll try :)

    @richardyot
I really like your lyrics and the combination of this with music. The track itself turned out to be very atmospheric and somewhat "psychedelic." My association is cold sadness. I really liked it.

    @YourJunk
I’m hard to say about the genre, this is not my cup of tea (do I use this expression correctly?). However, I like the piano part. It is very interesting to follow the development and chords, which I could never come up with and play. Like a look into another world.

    @uglyskratch
A very interesting look at the "classics". I like drums and I didn’t go that alien to the inner throb of the original song. The overall sound is just as wonderful.

    @shiftsynth1
It is melodious that I do not often meet with a modular. It sounds somewhat "cautious", a very interesting mood. I agree that it would be interesting to hear in a video game.

  • Haha your tunes balancing always between Genius and Lunacy.... I mean I am kinda tracked out fanboy ;-P I like this one also, reminds me on the stuff I listened when I was 16, 17... Has strong early Beck Vibes... Also a bit Ween somewhere... And this part around 0:56 reminds me very strong on something which I cant name right now... Amazing that you play all instruments yourself... Like the raw sound! Only the rhythm is sometimes a bit too much stumbling...
