Cubasis 3 just dropped. Any of you got it yet? My trigger finger is twitching mighty hard.
App Store average review is 3.6. 5 star reviews lead the pack with 1 star reviews in a relatively close second. So the average user experience is either it’s the new iOS DAW king, with only minor glitches that would be expected of any Version 1 app release of Cubasis 3’s magnitude. OR, it’s the worst app ever released and nothing but a shallow cash grab by the totally 100% EVIL Steinberg Corporation.
It’s $50 and all the FX/Waves plugins from CB 2.2 are supposed to transfer over. This is a point of contention between the 5 star folks saying the transfer is seamless and the 1 star folks saying the whole thing is a hot garbage fire.
I REALLY want to get it for myself as a belated Christmas present. Does anyone remember how long the wait was between Cubasis 2 and the final, stabilized version of Cubasis 2.2?
To throw another variable, Lars and his copy+paste bot are working overtime in the responses to remind everyone that Cubasis 3 is not an update to. Cubasis 2.2, but was rebuilt from the ground up. They’re also very big on mentioning that the app is compatible with iPhone.
A broken or difficult to use sampler (depending on the reviewer) is the big dealbreaker for most of the 1 Stars.
I was hoping to find something about Bus channels—as Lars had been saying Steinberg was working to implement them in the next version of Cubasis. Cubasis 3 has what they’re calling Group Channels. Only a single reviewer (4 or 5 star person) mentions them and seems to be using the term interchangeably with Bus channels. But others say that is the case.
Website and industry outlets are hailing Cubasis 3 as the new leader in iPad DAW capability with some pros even saying it’s a suitable replacement for a desktop/laptop DAW.
But I’m suspicious of all that hoopla. I think a lot—maybe all—of that type of “OMG THIS IS THE BEST EVER BUY IT NOW!” type coverage is bought and paid. The 5 star reviewers also seem a little too polished and enthusiastically supportive and laudatory of Cubasis 3 as the best iPad DAW and as a company. Lots of glad-handing and back-slapping going on with Lars and the 5 Star folks. I just don’t buy it when people are that enthusiastic about anything. Have y’all been alive lately? There’s absolutely no reason to be enthusiastic. Ever. But especially not when it’s enthusiasm for corporations and politicians.
But I also REALLY, REALLY, REALLY WANT A COOL, NEW TOY TO PLAY WITH AND I WANT IT NOW.
