Audiolayer vs 4pockets chameleon ~ which is more efficient?

Between AudioLayer and 4pockets Chameleon, which is a more CPU efficient and reliable Auv3 sampler?

Are the cpu usage differences significant?

If there are any other AUV3 samplers you think I should consider based on efficiency please let me know!

Thanks so much!!

They are very different samplers. Are you going to be using velocity layers? Lots of samples per instrument? Effects?

Thank you for this! No need for velocity layers but probably about 45 samples per instrument. No need for internal FX, I can do this via the external fx chain

    Long or short samples?

AudioLayer is pretty efficient. I can't compare to chameleon. If file names are set up using the convention AL follows, importing sample sets is straightforward.

There are some glitches in the release version exporting instruments that have been fixed in the AudioLayer beta.

IIRC, you can only have 16 samples per instrument in Chameleon.

Audiolayer has DFD (Direct from disk, which is the ability to read huge files without using up all of your RAM. It also prevents crashes from the OS closing an app that is using too much ram. This makes your RAM usage VERY efficient. You can load gigabyte-sized instruments with a fraction of that much RAM being available.

Chameleon is for making your own small sampled instruments. IIRC, you are only able to have 16 samples total for your multisampled instrument.

I don't know if I would say that one is better than the other--they serve different purposes. Chameleon for simple sampling, Audiolayer for playing big, professional sample sets that are usually downloaded, rather than made (although you can just as easily do simple sampling from Audiolayer as well).

  • The word sampler has so many meanings in music production terms.

AudioLayer for me is like a ROM-pler workstation that lets you load your own audio samples.
Chameleon is similar with severe restrictions on the number of samples allowed.

Chamleon is very light on CPU so you can have a lot of instances.

AudioLayer with massive audio samples and a lot of layers and internal FX can kill your DAW with 2 or more copies.

You might start with Chameleon and check out the provided presets. You'd have time to
ask for a refund if you're unhappy with the money spent.

Thinking outside the box... Nanostudio 2 can import 3 layers into the 3 oscillators of Obsidian. There are several instruments made by users on Patchstorage for NS2 and they
are a great balance between CPU and scaling in that excellent DAW.

You can sample any app with SynthJacker (using an audio interface loopback for the IAA's) and import 3 layers into NS2 yourself and make light weight instruments too.

My AudioLayer instruments made with SynthJacker are some of my favorite sounds taken from apps that are CPU hogs. Still I can only typically get away with a few before the 340MB limit is exceeded. I tend to make 4-5 layer instruments with long sample times to avoid any looping which kills realism to my ear for strings, piano, etc. I like the huge ROM-plers like the Nord Workstations.

The best solution to CPU vs sound was discovered my Scott Van Zandt but it takes a month (at minimum) to duplicate his process:
