Unhappy with BM3 / where is Ableton for iPad?

Hey guys,

I have tried working with BM3 for some time now (usually I am using REAPER) and there are definitely certain aspects Iike about BM3, the sampling engine is a monster, for example... but as a DAW it doesn't do much for me, tbh. :(

Are there any news about an Ableton version for iPads? I mean, common... it cannot be impossible, right? I would then continue to use BM3 as a delicious sampler. Maybe I have the completely wrong impression here, but it also feels a bit... abandoned by the developers?

Please don't understand this as me bashing BM3, I like a lot about it and the stuff I don't is just me, not the app, so it is not my intention to start "that kind of discussion", I am more interested in something a little more REAPER / news about an Ableton version for iPads, if there are any. :)

  • Try garageband live loops, launchpad app or stagelight/zenbeats

Many people use BM3 as a sampler connected to another iOS DAW.

BM3 recently had a major update. So definitely not abandoned.

Ableton Live on iPad seems highly unlikely. The cost of development likely more than they'd earn back in sales.

  • Oh, I did not see the update. Thank you! I see your point regarding costs, but how is it then that there is a Cubasis?

  • Zenbeats is worth a look. It's kind of Live like. Free to try out to see how it looks.

Cubasis is an order of magnitude less powerful than Live...so not sure how relevant it is to the discussion. I'd also say that Cubasis is different from BM3 but hardly a major leap from BM3. For some , they are complements.

The fact that Cubase doesn't exist on iOS tells you a lot about the economics.

Was wondering if you saw the update.. midi export is where it’s at, as a Maschine user.. will love to have midi import/export in ATOM to support it as a midi editor..

    Spending more time learning BM3..

  • Sometimes I feel I am 'Unhappy with iOS, where is desktop for iOS?'. Then i remind myself that desktop still exists and is of course usable. iOS is a platform with a whole range of significant differences, from hardware to OS to marketplace. After eight years of committing a ton of time on the platform and engaging with other users and devs I just feel like anything we have on the platform that is useful is a lucky bonus. I wager that BM3 gets a few decent updates and that a BM4 one day may be the big ticket. I don't see Ableton getting into iOS (beyond Link) for at least five to ten years.

  • What I hope Ableton will do instead is release a version of Max for iOS, I think this is better suited as it's open and modular, not Daw based. Or release Ableton Touch, an iOS version of Push which would be a mobile Push controller for Live. I think these are more likely (but still not very likely) as then the current Live users might buy it, since they could be used in unison with Live via Link.

  • When Nanostudio supports audio tracks (I would assume later this year based upon the current rate of progress) then that might work for you. It's kind of a mesh of Ableton's UX, with Reaper's routing flexibility.

Of all iOS scenarios in the near future this is the one that has the most potential for me (aside from just continuing to use and love BM3) . Cubasis 3 getting significantly bug fixed is in third place.

I suggest grabbing a cheap windows tablet with an N5000 or N4100 cpu (better than the Surface Go) and use Ableton if you like it :)

Isn't the iOS version of Push the Launchpad app?

Launchpad only has the basic features of session clips. Push is much deeper, but it's like Touchable pro in that you can't use it without Live (except as a basic midi controller). It's effectively a remote control of Ableton (and an instrument/sequencer). I'd like them to release an official iOS Live controller for Ableton as I find the others to be a bit unreliable.
