Question for Developers re: Audio Unit (AU on Mac, etc) vs. iOS AUv3

I love reading about the intricacies of writing code and the tech behind app creation but I am no developer by a long shot. With that in mind, sorry if the question is naive...

Is the Audio Unit (AU) of the Mac, desktop, laptop completely different than then the AUv3 used by iOS?

I ask because I'm curious about how difficult the translation (if you will) from one to another is? For instance the brilliant Fab Filter Plugins were AU and now are AUv3 as well. Same for Audio Damage, DDMF, and many other companies that sell a plugin for both Mac/PC/Laptop & iOS.

Is it that much of an undertaking to make an AUv3 version of an existing AU plugin? I wonder because as much as I love iOS music production and use it pretty much exclusively in my studio, there are still many plugins on desktop that I miss and would love to have as AUv3's on iOS.

For example, let's take the Waves Abbey Road plugins. The J37 Tape Machine Saturation plugin is available as an Audio Unit sized at 29MB. I have several iOS music production apps that are much larger than 30MB, including AUv3's. Since the size of the plugs aren't an issue could an AUv3 version of the Abbey Road plugins really be that hard to create.

I know WAVES and the other companies have to decide if it's feasible as a business model to even get involved that deep in iOS, but on the surface is it possible for AU plugins to be transferred, translated, or recreated as AUv3's?

Appreciate any insight...
