Genome...Still just about the best midi sequencer around... And I totally forgot about it...
I was wracking my brain to recall a sequencer that allowed me to change patterns, per part/channel, then I remembered it was Genome.
Messed with it some more tonight... My god, it’s got some absolutely genius level ideas inside it...
I’m trying to remember why I ever stopped using it...
If you have it, dig it out and play with it. If you don’t have it and you’re looking for an awesome midi sequencer, buy it.
This has been a public service announcement... with geetars...

never grabbed it but now you got me taking a double look at it
@MonkeyDrummer is working good even in ios13?
Genius level ideas? Sounds great!
What are they?
Maybe people don't use it as much because
1) not everybody likes writing music with clips and patterns and
2) it's no AUv3 host and it has no audio tracks
I still love it though for its pattern concept, scales and groove templates, MIDI clock master and slave capability, great MIDI learn and for the best polyphonic step sequencer that I know.
Great find... well, who needs ATOM anymore... that looper is special... but seems it need an update for iPadOS file system to import midi?
Thank you....
Auv3 ...... Maybe?
This was once my most expensive app purchase, in the days before Apple did app refunds. I was so unhappy with it, it was just too difficult to manage drawing Midi notes on the tiny screen that I just couldn't manage it. So it has sat gathering dust for all these years. Maybe I will take this push and reinstall it now that I have some years more experience with these things.
I blame it all on Tim Webb. If it wasn't for his demo I wouldn't have ever considered the app nor quite honestly any IOS music making.
Genome is really very good and still runs stable under iPad OS 13. It's totally good for playing live with patterns. A very cool feature is the performance mode, where you can play with pattern length and velocity. What always scares me off and keeps me from using it is that there have been no updates for 4 years now and I might not be able to open my projects at some point.
So is it or not a must buy guys😂😂someone seems to like, others seems to really dislike it😂😂😂I will like to use main as atom substitute in aum. could it be good?
Xequence 1 or 2 is much more feature rich. The price difference isn’t so much more either
Answer to both: Depends on your preference. Live pattern clip launching can only be done with Genome, Xequence is for sequencing multiple linear tracks and automation, ATOM only works as an AU but has neither clip launching nor automation support which is kinda no-go for serious (electronic music) work. But it's an AUv3 and imho the second best option after BeatHawk.
These are very different beasts. Xeq and Genome MIDI have different applications.
But it's an AUv3 and imho the second best option after BeatHawk.
I bought Beathawk as an impulse purchase once and am still to actually use it (!).
Am I missing out on it being useful as an auv3 midi sequencer?
Such an interesting thread.
I don’t understand how Genome can be a replacement for Atom if only one instance can be loaded into AUM.
But I am intrigued by the clip launching.
And you can kind of use Atom as a clip launcher with a little dexterity and lowered expectations: a new atom sequence will follow AUM’s quantum sync. You just have to turn off the replaced clip at the right time.
Would like to hear from anyone using Beathawk as an AU sequencer.
You can use it’s built in piano roll in a similar way to atom
Really. Like, BH can drive a sequence of Zeeon? And then another drives Model D? The iPad is dead at the moment, and I can't investigate!
Beathawk is insanely deep, and I underestimate it continually.
Doesn’t have to be multiple instances. One can drive multiple channels. But yes, you could also have multiple instances.
One instance can output multiple MIDI channels. You’d route genome to the various apps, then use AUM’s channel filtering to drive only the ones you want per channel. Same as using one BeatHawk instance.
I have a dozen apps that could replace the first word in this thread.
Fa'Gedda 'bout it.
I think I stopped using Genome, since after Modstep arrived, but would welcome an update. Never got on with it as well as Modstep personally but it's very capable.

Seems Genome can do with an iPadOS update for its file system (import/export).. Multiple instance (Auv3 is welcomed), but it seems to have all one would need as a midi program in iOS..
Edit.. pretty much pissed that ATOM is on hold.. No import, export as was promised on release..
Liked the midi learn, clips etc...
But WORST groove ever with a sequencer...Nothing stay in place even with a simple 4/4 beat...
You realize the Atom dev has to rewrite the app from the ground up? (It’s an Apple/coding issue I don’t pretend to understand.) I don’t think it’s a case of broken promises.
Yes, I know... That was some what, 8-9 months ago? Never got a response if import/export can be implemented in this ‘code’. Import/export could help with the wait on the rewrite..
Yeah. I don't view it as abandonment. He has a very full-time job and the rewrite is going to be very time-consuming.It'll happen when it happens.
I guess, it will happen when it happens..
I missed the whole Atom disappointment. For me, it's a revelation. I use Atom every day in AUM, and I just work around its limitations. It's simple and elegant. I definitely wish I could copy and paste and edit more easily.
But using Beathawk in that role might open things up.
In what kind of set-up?
Bought it. Best midi sequencer tried. Thx for the info @MonkeyDrummer
Very simple and basic setup...One ipad, a good soundcard...I really tried it many times (this kind of posts made me tried Genome each time).
I'm lucky with Modstep, Xequence2, Cubasis 2...Never had something regular and stable with Genome
Happy with people having fun with it, to me it's just unusable...
I’ve enjoyed using Genome from time to time but i always find myself back on Modstep when i want a solid midi sequencer. It’s been a faithful tool for my workflow.
