Protokol - new free midi monitor (iOS/osx/etc)

MIDI logging, OSC monitoring, and more...
Prokotol is a new utility by Hexler for the creator's toolbox: A lightweight, responsive console app for monitoring and logging control protocols.

Originally built as a MIDI monitor and Open Sound Control network checker, Protokol is designed to handle any complex message stream.

Protokol's Protocols
MIDI, OSC and Gamepad HID sources are all supported in the current version but anything is possible given sufficient demand. Contact us if you'd like to see additional protocols added: ArtNET / DMX? MQTT? Let us know.

Heavy Duty, Fast Response
All incoming data is rendered at 60 frames per second. With granular filtering of message and event types plus an optional timestamp, Protokol logs exactly what you need. This responsiveness and flexibility enables you to track down critical issues, conflicts, interrupts ... or just pretend you are Cypher observing the Matrix.

Cross Platform
Protokol installs on all platforms. Run a compact Raspberry Pi MIDI logger, or Linux based OSC monitor, or install on traditional Windows and macOS machines. Take Protokol with you in your pocket with mobile versions available for iOS and Android. Same interface, same speed, same accuracy. Download all versions here!

Beta
We built Protokol as an in-house tool to test our own apps during development, and quickly found use for it in our home studios (troubleshooting MIDI hardware). A few of our music producer mates saw it running and bugged us for a copy ... we cleaned up the UI and started giving it away.

Protokol is currently beta software, so if you have any feature requests we'd love to hear them, and if you see a glitch or bug we are equally interested to know.

  • It's a great utility to have, especially for OSC debugging.
Been using it for a while.

  • thanks for the tip, @waka_x.

  • I just installed Protokol, hoping to use it for SysEx messages. But I am unable to get it to respond. Using LK in Audiobus to send a simple CC, routed to Audiobus Virtual MIDI and to the Protokol virtual port. Protokol says it's connected to Audiobus3, but it receives nothing. MIDI filtering set to accept all messages, all channels. I load MidiWrench and it responds immediately. I've tried other ways using both AB and AUM, but always nothing.

I'm using an iPad 6 with iPadOS 15.3. I wonder if the app needs an update for newer OS.

  • I'm on 15.1 and it's working ok for me routing via AUM

Thanks. I tried it with a USB keyboard, and it works perfectly, as you'd expect. Just doesn't work with virtual ports, even its own. And I tried it on my iPad Air, with iOS 12.5.5, same problem. So it's not related to the OS version. Must be something I'm doing wrong, but hard to guess what.

Tried reinstall, iPad restart, no change. But I think I've got it. It only runs when it's frontmost. So it's not very useful for diagnosing apps on the same device. Is there a Background Audio option I've overlooked?

Protokol does not work in the background and I've literally asked the author for that feature from day one.
The only thing you can do is run Protokol in slide-over mode to have it running in the foreground and use a small font size.

  • Fwiw, Streambyter can be run as a midimonitor and is free anc works as an AU

Yes, I use StreamByter that way. However, it truncates SysEx messages with ..., so I can see only 8 or 9 bytes of a 21-byte message. I was hoping to find a more literal monitor.
