ITS DRAG AND DROP!!!! Facepalm!!! I tried everything... but - yeah too easy! Thank go out to Samuel for these cool Patches!!!
Great. Thank you for these presets, really like Mela synth.
What I don't like, however, is iOS's absolutely shite, spiteful, counter intuitive files system. That was way harder than it should have been 😠
Just give me something more like fucking windows or even android.... Jesus!
Thanks @White for keeping us always in-the-loop.
Mela 1.6 update adds a stereo Flanger and flexible routing options, release notes and demo video here:
https://nikolozi.com/blog/2020/4/24/mela-16-update
Agreed!
Also did not appreciate that drag-and-drop is the only way in which patches can be added in this synth. I do not find that discoverable in the UI, particularly since I have gestures disabled - which is for being able to better use various music and controller apps in the first place!
(The user guide does mention DnD for patches, however.)
What a great app!
Great update to a great app. Includes a tip jar. Here’s your chance to support a great dev. 😎👍🏼
Version 1.7 is out:
Oscillators:
• Sub-oscillator and Noise oscillator have been renamed to "Oscillator 3" and "Oscillator 4."
• All 4 oscillators now have exactly the same functionality.
• Noise is now one of the waveform types.
• Added a modern Phase Distortion algorithm with an additional Harmonics parameter. This is the same oscillator found in the NPD synth.
• Harmonics adjusts the richness of the generated waveform and modulating it sounds similar to filter sweeps.
• The Shape and Harmonics parameters of the PD waveform can be modulated via Mod Matrix.
New Virtual Analog Filter:
• Added a new virtual analog style self-oscillating resonant filter to Mela and Mela FX.
• The filter is similar to the one found in the NPD synth.
• It can be selected by setting the Type parameter to "B 12dB."
• The new filter can also morph between low-pass, band-pass and high-pass types.
LFO 3:
• Added a new LFO modulator to both Mela and Mela FX.
• As with the other LFOs, its Rate and Depth can be modulated.
Routing:
• Since the Mela Oscillators were generalized, the component names in the routing diagram were adjusted accordingly.
• Existing user presets will migrate correctly and will sound the same.
• "Split" option was renamed to "Shared Split."
• "F2: Noise Only" option was renamed to "3-1 Split."
• There's a new "2-2 Split" option which routes Oscillators 1 & 2 to Filter 1 and Oscillators 3 & 4 to Filter 2.
Turning Off Components:
Most Mela Synth and Mela FX components can either be disabled or bypassed. This means that components can be turned on or off as needed to optimise your CPU usage. Additionally, disabled component's parameters will have a dimmed look. This allows to quickly see which parts of the Synth or FX are affecting the sound.
• Oscillators can be disabled by setting the Waveform parameter to the "Off" value.
• Envelope 2 & 3 can be disabled by setting the Mode parameter to the "Off" value. Amp Envelope can't be disabled.
• LFOs can be disabled by setting the Waveform parameter to the "Off" value.
• Envelope Follower can be disabled by setting the Input parameter to the "Off" value.
• Effect controls dim and become disabled when effect is bypassed.
Presets:
• Updated Mela and Mela FX's factory presets by turning off sections not used to save CPU.
• Added new presets, most of which utilise the new PD oscillators and filter.
• Fixed an intermittent bug where an exported preset didn't contain correct preset name inside the file.
General:
• Mod Matrix's target list items are now grouped making it easier and faster to find the desired target parameters.
• Improved where the Number Pad appears with respect to the parameter value label it is modifying.
• Fixed Mela Synth unreliably changing volume when it received MIDI CC#7 (Volume) message. It will no longer do anything for that specific MIDI message.
• Updated user guide.
• Many other UI tweaks and minor improvements.
It's on sale right now, down from $9.99 to $4.99
I have a lot of synths. Will get this if it ever gets MPE
This seems like a really good synth. Like the addition of the phase distortion. Tempting...
It's a nice synth and it's improving at quite nice phase too.
What drives me nuts is that I can't seem to manually enter negative values in the mod-matrix! (the button with +/- and . only adds the comma not -). This could be a 'user malfunction' on my part but I can't find anything in the manual...
While Ring Mod and Osc Sync would be 'nice to have' features it doesn't stop me from enjoying Mela.
The overall sound is pretty 'digital' & 'sterile' as the oscillator phases seem to be reset for note.
It's a very hands on synth and easy to get around, 4 oscillators can create a pretty big sound
Considering it's on sale it's a bargain and it includes a good AUv3 FX unit that can be used with other apps too and most parameters can be modulated by built-in LFOs using the matrix.
(But I have not found a way to re-order the effects).
I'd say it's worth a shot!
Here's a 'preset' I messed up
https://www.dropbox.com/s/6j0hzppsx53qjie/CrazyPad.melainstrument?dl=0
(It should be possible to just 'Open In...' in Mela. If not save it somewhere and do a drag'n'drop to Mela from Files.app pop-over).
Nice patch @Samu Like it!
First type the value, i.e. 45.55. Than hold the +_. button, slide down and release it. So you can toggle between + and -
Hope it works for you!
Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a shot! (Works fine, thanks again).
Regarding the patch, put a chord or note on hold and mess with the filter to reveal a fastish per-note octave-arpeggio and put some heat on the foldback distortion with increased resonance.
Mela is one fun synth, maybe some day it will get better export functions than one patch at a time.
Thankfully the patches are shared between stand alone and AUv3...
...wish the Humbletune apps did that too.
Cheers!
Will try that, @Samu
btw....wish you could change the color. I like orange but this a bit too orange.
@Samu have u asked for ring mod and osc clip? Nikolozi certainly seems to be up for adding things
All in due time
The proper way to implement ring modulation 'Mela Style' would be to add additional 'Routings' where the oscillators 'cross-breed'.
There's already the 'split mode' and in split mode each oscillator pair could have a multiply option for ring mod.
(It would get out of control with another multiply option between the both oscillator pairs).
Oscillator Sync could be done like on most wave-table synths (like in synth master one) by folding the wave back into itself .
I'll let Mela have it's progress and see where it goes
(For my own experimental needs I can build this stuff in Drambo when needed).
Just got this, have only played through some presets so far, but I LOVE it. Fantastic sounding synth. I will definitely do a video on this at some point soonish.
Anyone more presets???
https://nikolozi.com/blog/artist-presets-for-mela
Another Sound designer (Thomas Mavrofides) provided another set of 21 Presets for Mela
Oh I wish @Spidericemidas would get his finger on this one - right up his alley!
awesome!
ya spider... stop slacking 🤣😎 we need those sounds my man hehe
anyone know if mela is going universal?
This app is worth getting just as an FX unit, the fact that the synth is great too is a bonus.
Oh wow, more presets, great. The lack of presets is one of the only areas that could be improved on. And yes, as an fx unit it is phenomenal. I'll be doing a vid on this at some point in the next month or so for sure.
Another sound designing forum extravaganza would be cool.
Anyone remembering? We used to pick a synth and for a whole month we designed sounds and put them into an Audiobus forum community pack. #thesegoldendays
Yes, the Zeeon one was pretty good.
Speaking of which, seems Fruitbat is no longer a member..?
Version: 1.8 is out:
• Renamed Main and FX & Modulations pages to Design and Shape respectively.
• If the audio unit's window provided by the host is large enough, both pages can be displayed at the same by tapping on the expand button. And collapsed again, by tapping on the collapse button.
Mela FX:
• Like Mela Synth, Mela FX now has 2 pages of controls.
• Both pages will be displayed at the same time if the audio unit's window provided by the host is large enough.
• Added the Input section with the Pan and Level parameters.
• The Input section's Pan and Level parameters can be modulated via the Mod Matrix.
• Filter FX was renamed to Filter 1 and Filter 2 was added.
• Added the Routing section, which allows filters to be placed in serial or parallel. Additionally, added options for the FX section placement with respect to the filters.
General:
• Added new presets for both, Mela Synth and Mela FX audio units.
• In both audio units, fixed LFO 3 not receiving tempo and beat position correctly from the host.
• Fixed popover lists not scrolling to the selected item when displayed.
• Added a link to the Mela FAQ webpage in the app's settings menu.
• Updated User Guide.
Version 1.9 is out:
• Oscillators can now be made free running by preventing them to retrigger on key press. Simply toggle on the Free parameter switch.
• Added the ability to modulate Mod Matrix Intensity parameters in both Mela and Mela FX audio units.
• Improved the Key source behaviour. Instead of generating only positive values relative to the C-2 key, Mela now produces a bipolar signal relative to C3. This means, when playing C3 note there will be no modulation applied to the target.
• The factory presets have been updated to account for the above change. You may need to adjust your own presets as well, in case they sound a bit different because of the new Key source behaviour.
• Improved how LFOs work internally: including the code efficiency as well as how they sync with the host.
• Improved LFO waveform generation algorithms: including fixing the square waveforms not generating accurately.
• Added smoothing to Mod Wheel, Aftertouch and Pitch Bend. This prevents any zipper sounds when they are used as modulation sources.
• An error dialog will be presented when trying to load a preset that was created using a newer version of Mela.
• An error dialog will be presented when trying to load a corrupted preset file.
• Improved Mela FX's Default and Init presets.
• Fixed iOS 14 compatibility issues.
• Updated User Guide.
Whoa this is big, it's one of the things I've always loved about Zeeon. The one other feature I'd like to see implemented is oscillator sync.
Nice!
Sweet I love this synth
