AUM, iConnect and Ableton
Hey guys,
I’m new around here and am finding a wealth of information about iOS music making which I’m truely grateful for and inspired by.
Like most of you, I have dozens of really interesting ideas sitting on my iPad which I would really love to now send over to Ableton to tweak, mix, finish and release.
I have an iConnect Audio 2+ and am wondering if I can run multiple outputs out of AUM of each individual audio channel into Ableton Live as a multitrack and make a multi track recording while I’m jamming, or can I only get a stereo send out of AUM into Ableton.
I have done much Googling but cannot find the information I’m looking for.
I reached out to Jonatan at AUM and he told me it’s theoretically possible to do this, but doesn’t have access to any iConnect devices and that I should pose the question here.
Any information, articles, manuals or videos that describe the process would be wonderful.
I’m hoping to make a video of the process once I can figure it all out, so there is something online for future reference.

it all depends on how many outputs your iconnect has. I have an iconnectmidi 2+ and there are only 1 pair or outputs to send it through.
So if it can handle more than one set of connections, you would just select each output in Aum per channel. then in abelton you would select those same inputs per track.
I know my i connect was the best thing i ever did to bring together my ipad and desktop daw. it’s also fun to use the ipad as an external effect and record back into your desktop daw.

@peaking I have the iCA4+ and that gives me by default 8 mono or 4 stereo out and in. This is a USB audio connection so the connections are virtual. I think your device should give you the same. When you connect your ipad to the iConnect box AUM should automatically see the audio inputs and output under hardware inputs and hardware outputs. With ableton and a PC you need the correct drivers to set it up which is a little more tricky.

@peaking Ok. So connect the ipad to the iConnectivity box then launch AUM. Press the plus sign and add audio. So the top circle is the audio source, press plus and select hardware input and you should get this ....

On the mac side Im not sure but I bet its easier than on a PC. Just a hunch

Calling the iCA4+ whisperer! Your help is needed!
If the Ableton PC/Mac uses it's own interface you have to use the physical channels of the iCA as pictured above.
With the iCA in double host mode (connected to both iPad and PC/Mac) it's more convenient to use the virtual channels (up to 5 stereo or 10 mono iirc).
They appear at the same location in AUM, below physical ports and start with number 7/8 (on iCA4+) or 5/6 (on iCA2+).
In Ableton they should be selectable from the respective driver panel when you define track source and destinations.
This part is really easy to setup... the more challenging aspect is the routing matrix with it's submix panels. The latter is a great feature if you need submixes, otherwise they are just an obstacle and distracting.
I found the default setup with it's many pre-routed pathes confusing, so I wiped out everything and started to enter only those lines that were required.
It's a small (extra) effort, but then you quickly learn exactly what that switchboard is about.
(admittedly it's not totally intuitive, but early versions of RME's TotalMix weren't either... and TotalMix has been praised at lot)
I multitrack record out of AUM on iPad to Ableton with two audio interfaces with optical ADAT.
For example, in my set up, ADAT out of Arturia Audiofuse connected to iPad to the ADAT in of the Focusrite Saffire Pro 40. You get 8 mono channels (or 4 stereo). Although recently I recored an extra two with 2 line out channels from audiofuse into the Saffire Pro 40 and into Ableton.
I appreciate this is convoluted but it appears to be the best and most stable way I have been able to do this. Before hand I was recording stems into AUM and the airdropping them over to the Macbook to put into Ableton. But so often AUM would drop out mid record and lose all the stems.

you can also record individual tracks in aum. then export in your computer via audioshare... easy and not costy
It's really easy in AUM, just select your hardware channels in the output. In the ICA4 patchbay, make sure the channels are routed to the desktop. Enable the channels in Ableton Live prefs, and you'll see the audio signals in the drop down list in the mixer panel.
All hosts which have multi channel hardware interface support will show the outputs and inputs
Also you can enable more Audio channels in iConnectivity iConfig desktop app (in the Audio info page). So you can choose to have more outputs than inputs for example.
@Calverhall I second your statement that Adat optical (Toslink) is the most reliable sytem interconnection, and it's (effectively) independant from OS or DAW.
But the thread opener has an iCA2+ (and is unlikely to invest in 2 expensive interfaces)
Recently someone reported trouble with the supposed functionality of the iCA2+.
According to iConnectivity it should operate just like the iCA4+ (which most users here are familiar with), the lower hardware channel count being the only difference.
(I'm also a 4+ owner and it's running nice for years, but I have been extremely careful before applying IOS updates, as these spoilt the party a couple of times in the past)
It's important to get familiar with the software channel concept because it's the only way to keep your hardware io free for it's intended purpose: microphone and instrument/line input and monitor connection.
