MPE assignment

I recently acquired iPad Pro 11 inch and some apps which support MPE (quanta and continua). I also own an iPhone X with 3D Touch. I used midimittr to connect the iPhone X to the iPad Pro, all good. I used Ribbons app to send midi notes from iPhone to iPad running Quanta. The slides and pitch bend works fine. How do I map the Z parameter to send pressure data to quanta? I’m stuck here. Need advise. Thank you.

  • Ok, I used the mod matrix to map cc74 to various destination and it works. How do I do the z pressure?

  • I believe that the pressure setting is transmitted as Channel Pressure (hex message: D ).
I do see this getting transmitted when selecting the Y-Axis. When selecting the Z-axis, the transmitted pressure is always 0 (iPhone 7 with 3D-Touch), though I do see the visual pressure feedback in Ribbons.
This would appear to be a bug to me!

BTW - can you turn off the Ribbons sound generation, or are you just turning down the volume on the iPhone?

If you are interested in using iOS apps to generate MPE Midi, you will want to check out this wiki page: https://wiki.audiob.us/mpe_sw_controller.txt

It describes AC Sabre, Aftertouch, GeoShred, KB-1, Mononoke Pads, Ribbons, Thumbjam, and Velocity Keyboard.

The implementations of these apps have various (subtle and not so subtle) differences in terms of the generated MPE Midi. Employing Mozaic scripting might be useful to better control / unify behavior across apps.

  • Thank you very much. I will check them out. Regarding the ribbons app, if I change the midi output to any destination other than ribbons, the audio automatically disables itself. I will be experimenting with geoshreds MPE functionality. I want to utilise the 3D Touch feature of my iPhone X sadly been removed from the newer iPhones.

  • Thanks @supadupa555! With respect to 3D-Touch, as far as I could tell (other than Ribbons, which may have a bug in not forwarding the value), this feature is used by Aftertouch, KB-1, and Thumbjam apps.
