OT - Lighting For Storytelling

This one is waaayyy OT, but if anyone is interested in illustration, painting, CG, photography or cinematography then this video might be of interest - it's a video I've just released on YouTube that is based on many years of research and experience (I've worked as an illustrator for many years and also as a lighting lead in film):

@richardyot nice work mate. I use to love following your craft on the LightWave and Modo forums when i was doing 3D work extensively. Keep up the great work.

  • Posh stuff there Yot. Feels very collegiate. Fear many of us at the back need the five minute version, but no doubt those in the business (or who wish to be) would revel in the depth. Were you using some sort of sound-cleaner-upper on the voice? Brushfri or its equivalent?

Thanks! I didn't know you did 3D, but I've seen your hand-drawn art, which is great!

Yes it is obviously super-specialised. It's endlessly fascinating to me, but if you're not into this kind of stuff it must be a little bit like listening to your next-door neighbour talk about his angling gear for an hour.

No cleanup on the voice, I just used a condenser mic to do the recording. I think this one was recorded with a Violet Atomic, but these days I use an Aston Stealth mic in the dark voice for voice-over (it avoids any sibilance etc). I do minimal processing on the voice, just a tiny bit of compression (but not too much otherwise it tends to emphasize icky mouth noises) and a brick wall limiter. I've done various experiments to try and find what sounds best, but generally the less is more approach works best for me.

Yeah. It was a while ago. Here’s stuff i did from back in the day. I was pretty active in the LightWave and C4D Community back in the day.

Yes indeed it is. Lately I’ve been testing out the Blender3D waters. This app has grown up a lot and looks on and above par with most of the workflows i learned my craft on.

Guess I’ll need to slow my roll on the piano roll a bit to take up another instrument 😬

I haven't really dabbled with Blender yet, but Evee certainly looks tempting! As you say, so much to learn, so little time...

Isn't that one of the wonderful problems though? :) Feel very grateful that most days end before I'm ready. Reminded often (especially as regards focus and all the time-sinks there are etc) of Thoreau's dictum: The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it.

As long as your deathbed regrets involve few Candy Crushes etc I think all will be well...

Blender's definitely worth getting into, especially now, I've used it in my studio for years now and it gets better at such a rate - if you draw, you'll love grease pencil...
