  • It’s nice to hear that the feel/ergonomics clicks with you @kobamoto. The machine definitely has a lot going for it. It’s also quite possible that it would have grown on me with time.

For now I’m coming away with the urge to commit to the tools I already have—esp, patterning + gestrument spraying midi data onto my laptop.

Re: the design the "clinical" vibe is one of the things that attracted me to the 'Samples: The display window mirrors the overall aesthetic which is as plain as can be for a machine that is mostly "all on one page" functionality. To me these units say: here are six voices, a bunch of controls and the blank slate is all Yours now Go!

@kobamoto have you got your 'Cycles yet m'man? I see No signs of availability as a non-pre-orderer on these.

yep , this cat out here got two from perfect circuit and decided he just needed one so I grabbed the other one.

that clinical blank slate vibe is what I like about it too, they just look like they are ready to go without imposing any particular direction on the user, so if you didn't listen to what you were working on previously you'd have no idea... it's kind of refreshing.

  • Uh, oh, my perspective is starting to shift! Arriving at expressive, inspiring results is so damn quick on this thing... If I don't approach it like a box to develop and polish ideas on, whether I like touching it won't matter.

A workflow that already works well is to just focus on 1-2 voices, get some variations going with chance, lfo, and knob twiddling, and record straight to DAW. "Now go!" like @Proppa says. 👹

yeah they are both such versatile boxes the sum of the parts ratio to value is incredible... I only wish the model samples could actually sample omg..... and the model cycles is a keeper for me but I wasn't happy with the knob wiggling at first (it pissed me off actually lol) ... cause the knobs on the model samples are so tight and I was expecting that same feel on the cycles but I got over it :) , it might even be better for avoiding the changing parameters by mistake via a knock here and there

  • Btw, I think the square buttons mostly needed breaking in to get rid of the wobbly sensation: the buttons I’ve pressed less still do it, the row in the bottom much less so. It’s like the switches under there had extra resistance before breaking in...

The combo of the all sweet spots sound engines with tricks like control all is every bit as epic and cooky as I hoped. 👹

Very unique tutorial. Just got mine yesterday and have been watching video after video but this was like an express train. Cut through so much stuff to show the fastest way to getting to this units strengths. Thanks for the link mate!

FYI... so apparently electron has not fixed the issues with USB audio. I initially bought a m:s due to the theoretical class compliant audio. At first I thought they fixed it on the m:c as it seems to be working. But after using the new, and awesome Tensor app with it, and recording into AUM, I’ve discovered that usb audio cuts out after a random period of time... Bummer, but I’m keeping the m:c because as a “groove box” it’s awesome. Especially for the price.

I have to ask are you using an Apple branded camera connection kit to connect your model cycles to your iOS device for usb audio?
I know from experience that non apple branded dongles do not work reliably.

can you load long samples like pads and arps in? or do you load up like quick one shots?

There is some limits if you want to build a slow-moving drone due to its envelope, but yes you can load long samples. I use the MS to build a whole song, not just a drum tracks. You can lock the samples, which helps.

Here’s a path to getting long drone sounds on the model cycles. Easy.

A guy that makes iPad apps for various Elektron devices is beta testing for a new app for the cycles. Only had a few moments with the beta but it seems cool. Randomize for the win!
