Instabuy whether Patterning 2 or separate app, as long as the work made in one can be used in the other.

It will be a separate app, free to download, with an IAP ($4.99 on launch) to unlock saving and full exporting features.

Songs can be exported from iPhone -> iPad, but not the other way, since the phone doesn't support all the features of P2.

Drum kits can be exported from Patterning 2 -> Patterning for iPhone. The iPhone version also gives you access to all of the Cloud Kits, but you cannot currently create your own kits.... (It will likely stay that way as the focus is a streamlined. on-the-go version of the app, not a full featured version.)

Would this be a surprise AU too 🤔 I recall seeing the reason they didn’t want to make patterning an AU is it would be too much to fit in. A slimmed down iphone sized version though on the other hand....

iPhone SE supported or is it optimized for bigger screens?

  • iPhone SE supported or is it optimized for bigger screens?

It is, but it's been a challenge... might not look quite as nice as on the bigger screen. However, it will require iOS 13.2 or later.

That's rough for my workflow, as I like to start things on the iPad, tweak them on my phone whenever I have time, then finish everything on my iPad.

Still looking forward to the app, though!

Would it be possible to have parameters for features not in the iPhone version just "carried over"?

I.e. you could transfer from iPad to iPhone. You wouldn't be able to edit parameters not available on the phone, however, those parameters are just stored in the background so when you transfer back they're still there. Obviously, if you delete a note that had a non-phone setting you would lose that setting, but editing a parameter that's available in both (e.g. velocity) won't affect other parameters not available on the phone (whatever those are).

No idea how data is stored, but if it's a hierarchical schema like XML it could work?

Another option is to be able to transfer to the iPhone, but non-phone parameters are just lost. Not ideal, but still better than not having a bi-directional path.

The primary way I would see using this app would be to take an existing beat I've worked out for a track and, while on the go, coming up with a bunch of alternate versions to add variety. Therefore bi-directional transfers would be essential.

maybe there can be an phone pro version or special iap or something cause I've been dreaming about a version of patterning on the phone that allowed editing and making of kits too, to be honest that was the killer anticipation of the phone version... building your kits on the go, making beats on the go, and then transferring to the iPad later... Ben knows what he's doing but maybe if enough people show interest maybe he'll reconsider, I dunno I'm a little bummed

  • For transferring songs back and forth... For the most part I could "ignore" the unsupported features on the iPhone without removing them from the song file.... But mainly I'd be worried about things like drum kit swapping and pattern tempos. I guess one option is to simply not allow songs that include those (and other major unsupported) features to open on the phone.

Ben I know it's tough to wrestle with your vision sometimes, I'm grateful for any considerations you might have, can't tell you how much I appreciate your work in the iOS community.

I've been able to figure out a compromise. The only kinds of songs that won't be supported (AFAICT) on iPhone
are songs that use drum kit swapping. Other unsupported features will be uneditable, but the songs will still load.

    Excellent!

  • Excellent indeed, thank you very much!
