Room Equalization

So this is likely to be a fairly niche interest, however I thought it might still be helpful to share, even if it's too just a small number of interested people.

For the last year or so I've been looking into room treatments and doing a lot of research and experimentation, fitting bass traps and acoustic foam to try and improve the sound in my room for both recording and monitoring (this was partly forced on my as I made some training for Lynda.com they found my room had too much echo so I had to buy some acoustic foam to deaden it a little).

I've done a lot of research around the subject and it's a very challenging field, getting any room to sound good is pretty tricky, especially where bass is concerned.

However one thing that has worked very well was using a measurement microphone to both find the optimal placement for my speakers, and to then EQ the worst room resonances out. This has definitely cleared the really boomy bass that was caused by standing waves in my room, and now the bass is much tighter and more accurate.

Here's a short video example showing the before and after, it's just a quickly cobbled together effort:

Room EQ certainly isn't a magic bullet, and room treatment, especially bass traps, are still super-important, but this approach has definitely helped me to get the bass under control in my room.

I forgot to add that once you’ve measured the room and created the corrective EQ you can save that as a convolution file and then import it into a convolution reverb on your Master Strip to correct for the room while monitoring in your DAW. So this works on iOS as well as desktop.

No need to fix the room (physically) anymore - We'll just fix it in post! :)

Which convolution tool on iOS do you use?

I'm using either Gospel Musician's IMPULStation or the built-in one in Auria.

You still need to do anything possible to fix the room, but those standing waves are impossible to fix on a normal person's budget (you would need huge and very solid bass traps). Room EQ can help to mitigate them, albeit at the cost of a measurement mic, which range in price from around £30 for the Behringer one to about £100 for the MiniDSP USB one. I used an £85 XLR model.

  • In my opinion, however much gear you have, one think that truly is worth the cost is getting in someone who knows how to acoustically treat a room.

Talk to someone like myself about gear, and it’s drooling over synths. Talk to a proper studio owner and it’s their swish bass baffles and the qualities of their monitoring systems they will wax lyrical about :) I find the subject quite interesting, but a tad confusing at times.
