ElasticFriend™: Elastic Drums Lemur Template

A year ago I switched back to iOS for my phone solely to make music / do sampling. I've been really enjoying jamming in Elastic Drums on the iPhone as it has a lot of options with the Pure Data patches and sampler. Over time I have run into issues with ElasticDrum, but as I love the workflow and power inside I've stuck with it.

To work around some of the quirks/limitations I've created ElasticFriend™, a Lemur template run on a second device (I use an iPhone 4s) connected via bluetooth for additional controls:

  • Latching Jam FX - Now you can turn on stutter and delay and go back to editing your pattern. Even works with pattern switching!
  • Pitch sequencer - On the iPhone programming pitches in Elastic Drums is pretty much impossible. You can use this sequencer to change the pitch of a chosen track, either for automation recording or for some insanity live.
  • Pattern Sequencer - Similar to the pitch sequencer but you can automate program changes.

Here is the Lemur library page with the download, details and setup info: https://liine.net/en/community/user-library/view/751/

I've been surprised by how much midi I can throw at Elastic Drums and it still plays cleanly, even when changing programs. Let me know if you use this or have any questions! My goal is to update this as I add more, my next thought it to improve the pitch sequencing (scales etc).

Thanks for making this, and making it available. You opened a door way to a favorite app (ED) and made me glad I invested another (Lemur)
Not to mention: tons of fun...

  • Nice!
Maybe add a screen shot so peeps get an idea how it looks?

  • I'm tempted to attempt something similar in mozaic 🤔

Thanks! A lot of my templates are for highly custom setups, but when I do something generally usable I want to share it!

There's one screenshot on the lemur page, but I'll post some here with my next update.

Please do! None of it is rocket science, Lemur is just the best tool for my use case and the one I know best.

  • Cheers @quartzite - does the lemur template basically work by just mapping the knob controller to a midi input? I can't find cc values for pitch, or much else in elastic drums manual...

Yea that's exactly how the pitch page of the template works. Its pretty much just a step sequencer pointing to the pitch knob. In ElasticDrum the values line up with chromatic so I use that. I limit my step sequencer to an octave above/below a default set via a knob to make it easy to program discrete pitches.

Its worth noting that I don't actually send notes (drum triggers) with my template. For my sequencing I was just adding the notes directly in ElasticDrum

My next "release" allows you to do scales and adds info telling you the pitches you are sending. I'll try to post it later today :)

Keep up the good work- it’s much appreciated

  • Ah cool, I might already have half of that in one of the demo scripts I messed with, will hopefully have a bit of time towards the end of the week 😁

  • Getting this error message on chrome trying to go into liine...

Yea... Liine's cert expired again, I just click advanced and proceed without ssl. It isn't really a security issue as long as you aren't sending a password. They've had a lot of website issues over the years (due to no one really working on Lemur anymore). Its sad cuz Lemur is still great...

  • Yes, i tried that but neither safari nor chrome on my ipad will let me go there, even if i click the ‘proceed unsafely’ or whatever button...hmmmm

Works on my desktop ok but yea mobile may be restricting you. Maybe Brave?

I just released an updated template, version 0.3.2. It has improvements to pitch sequencer with wider range, notes visualization, setting of scales via scales page, glide mode. See it on the liine page.

Note that when you first start you may want to "jiggle" some of the knobs (at least the base note knob) so the UI updates. I'll fix it later.

    Hope y'all find it useful!

  • Brave lets me open liine.net, but the download fails every time, weird...

  • edited March 2020

You have to have a liine account to download, I wouldn't be surprised if their site doesn't even work right on iOS. I've not really tried tbh.

  • Also fails in Firefox btw
