Drumperfect and polyrhythms
I'm trying to find an app that allows experimenting with polyrhythms. I guess that would include multiple rhythms with different time signatures. Does Drumperfect have this functionality?
Comments
Thumbjam or Drumjam fits the bill for me for polyrhythm. Layering sounds is always the best way to get the unique polyrhythm you seek.
Thanks WMWM! After watching a demo, I do really wish Drumperfect had a way of layering 2 sequences with different time signatures. I have thumbjam but never thought about trying it in there. The app I've been using is iSequence. Totally simple and endlessly fun. Just would like something which did the same thing but with more realistic samples...![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
As long as you mean polyrhythms, i.e. contrasting cross rhythms where the bar length is common but the subdivisions are different, then DrumPerfect can do this.
If you want a 5 against 4 feel, all you have to do is set your time sig to 4/4 and your subdivisions to 4 and set up your straight 4 rhythm, then change the subdivisions to 5 and set up your 5 rhythm, bearing in mind that your 5 beats will come every 4 subdivisions, you have to ignore the four numbered beats. If you need finer beat divisions, multiply the subdivision values I've given by 2.
I used this technique to get this swing versus straight beat.

I know what you mean, Drum perfect is good at what is does, albeit very cumbersome and time consuming. I would like to see trigger pads implemented as well, we can wish right?
I have found for experimenting with polyrhythm, weather you care about bar lengths or signatures or not, is to fire up your sample player of choice (lots of good ones out there) and record into Loopy, you can set the metronome to what ever signature you want as a tempo guide as well as the bar length. I usually set the bar length to fit the intended rhythm ( long or short) and Drumjam away, export to audioshare, trim and jam on.
Drumperfect is in its infancy and may evolve. I hope it does for I like the multisampled aspect of it. A sale would be very welcome as well:) still wishing.
@WMWM I'd love to hear you do 7 across a bar of 6/8 with your method...
Thanks @PaulB, I really appreciate the distinction. I just didn't know the terms. I would like to also vary the bar length and be able to use 2 layers. I love what happens when they start at different places as they cycle. Very intriguing swing feel in there. Thanks for the ideas! @WMWM I don't feel Drumperfect is cumbersome personally (I broke down and bought it anyways
). Its just a different approach. A little more like sculpting. I really like how it makes me think about the beat. And I know there is a lot of depth there but so far, after an hour, I felt like the interface was pretty understandable (o, and I did watch thesoundtestroom demo which help alot!)
@PaulB nice tip!
I just realized that I think all that would be needed is to have 2 layers to play at the same time. Could define different meters for each! A great example for getting the feel of this is an app called sequenceApp (I mistakenly called it iSequence above, sorry).
Or run it into a DAW...first track at one rhythm, then add the second in another track.

That's polymetric rhythms. This track has different parts playing polymetrically in the verses.

Ok, I gotta ask, why would you love that? If you really want to know how, PM me and I will show you how I pair 7 and 6, no sequencing necessary.
I must know, are you a percussionist?
I am sure gkillmaster will have a blast with his new app
Nice Gentle Giant tune BTW. But I was thinking more Fela Kuti.

+1 to what Funjunkie27 said fwiw.
@WMWM I'd love to hear it because your method sounds very freehand and 7 across 6 isn't easy. I appreciate great skill and I'm guessing you have that skill if you find your method to be successful for you. Not sure how a PM from me will enable you to show me though...
I'm not a percussionist, although as a bass guitarist I've worked with some good drummers and am interested in the techniques.
Haven't heard that GG album in years @PaulB! Man, the memories there!
@funjunkie27 I used to rehearse that tune with a band I was in. Great fun to play...
Ha, I was obsessed with Gentle Giant when I was in college! Maybe that's why I love polyrhythms so much. Embarrassed to say, but I can listen to sequenceApp for hours. Especially when I feel the need to create some inspiration or motivation... Yes, I'm loving Drumperfect. I'm sure it will inspire many songs for me...
@PaulB
Are you being facetious? That's cool.
Your right, 7 across 6 isn't easy (irregular) but I ACCEPT your challenge and I pose the same in return. We can do this as PM or make a spectacle of it if you so choose.
Let's up it a bit and make somthing useful out of it instead of just a 15 second snippet. A full blown production utilizing the rhythmns you asked for as some part of the song.
I see your posts and respect your app knowledge but....Man I love a challenge. Hit me up, balls in your court!
I bet that was a blast @PaulB. No video to share?
@WMWM No, not being facetious. I genuinely like to hear adventurous and unusual beats and I thought 7 against 6 done freehand like that would be a bit of a challenge for even a decent percussionist. My way with DP it's not really more difficult than any other polyrhythm, since I don't need to have the drumming chops to do it. I'll give it a go, but it may take a while. I know what I'm like and life gets in the way of making music. I'll get back to you when I have something.
@funjunkie27 Yes it was. Sorry, not even a recording, as far as I know.
@PaulB you should offer to sit in with Three Friends on their Cruise to the Edge tour, and I'll ensure the video happens!
Lol. They already have a much better bass player than me.
Bet he can't wail on iOS though!
Possibly not...

Ah, my mistake, it so hard to tell with words without body language as I'm sure everyone is aware of. That, combined with a growing sense of elitism going on around here lately left me to believe what was apparently untrue. I stand corrected.
It happens. Not a problem.
Great, where still on then.
Whenever you get done, let me know as I am nearing completion. Thank you for your understanding Paul.
Feeling a little like John Henry here, ya know, man vs the machine. " before I let that stream drill beat me down gonna die with a hammer in my hand"
