Alesis Vortex Wireless with iPad and Thumbjam

I have an iPad Pro 12.9 (2017) and also an Alesis Vortex Wireless.
I installed ThumbJam and tried some sounds. My setup looks somehow like this:
I have a USB hub that is connected to the iPad with the camera connection kit. The hub is connected to my midi/audio interface (which is connected to the PA) and I have the Alesis Vortex connected to the hub.

I'm able to play with the Alesis Vortex and the sounds from ThumbJam (or GarageBand etc.). Does anyone know how I could change the instruments via the Vortex itself, with a pad or something? I'm quite new to the business.

  • Yes!
You need to use the Alesis Vortex preset installer on a computer with your Vortex hooked up via USB.
You can have up to 25 preset (templates) saved on the vortex. I used a different preset for each synth, sound module or app that I use.
I use 7 pads to switch between sounds and one as a Panic button to shut off all notes.

    1. Open the installer with the Vortex hooked up

    2. Select new preset at the top Select Pads (it will Highlight Blue)

    3. Select Type, there is scroll down menu, select Program Change

    4. Under program # input the number of the patch you want. This may be off by one number depending upon your gear. If you sound device patch numbers start at 01 but the Vortex
Program number starts at 00 you will need the lower the number by 1. If not then ignore this.

    5. The MSB and LSB these are used to select the Bank to get to the proper patch (program) number. If you are not switching banks leave these alone. Each sound source has it's own midi numbers for msb and lsb to switch banks. You need to find that info so that you may input it.

    6. Name and save your preset.

    7. Load the preset on the to Vortex. You are all set!

When I first started with this it was very confusing and frustrating to me there were no instructions or tutorials.

I was using the Vortex with iM1. The discovery that only having to input the program number actullay was all needed to select the patch I wanted and ignoring the MSB, LSB was a lifesaver.

The vocabulary used by different manufacturers is different and confuses things even more. i.e. Some call the sounds "programs" others "patches" Some call the groups of sounds "Banks" some "Cards" Some Presets etc. there are no universal terms so be aware of that. It is like how some patches start at 01 and some at 00, no universal standard.

The MSB and LSB can be hard or impossible to find for some sound sources and again they can vary between manufacturers.

Because I am not that bright I found a simple work around

In iM1 I copied and saved my favorite sounds (patches) to the first User Sound Card (first user bank)

When I open iM1 on my iPad I select the First User Sound Card and leave it. I do not have to switch banks! So my Vortext preset for the iM1 is just program #'s and I leave the MSB and LSB alone

I have 14 favorite sounds so I made 2 presets for the Vortex (preset 01& 02) I have each sound on 1 of the 7 pads and the panic button on the 8th.

On my Hard Ware Synth, a Roland SE-02 I did the same thing, copied and created my favorite sounds in the User bank and I select that when I turn it on. So once again I only need program numbers in the Vortex preset program for the pads and don't mess with the MSB, LSB

This works for me so far

Really, once I figured out that all the manufacturers used different vocabularies and I had to be loose with interpretations I was able to relax a bit and use the context to help. I was so rigid reading instructions and nothing matched I was so frustrated.

Since then there is a guy with some good tutorials on YouTube! I have watched them all.

  • Thank you very much for your help!
I will try this as soon as possible.
The Vortex shown in this program is the vortex wireless 2. I have the vortex wireless (1). Will this work anyway?

  • It is the same program I believe
