How to load whole kit in BeatHawk? I’m using BopPad too

I have a Bop pad and many of the expansions for BeatHawk including the acoustic drums.

In spite of several tries, I have no idea how to reliably call up the acoustic drum kit with any kind of basic general MIDI ly]aout out

Also, when I trigger my pads, I get some sort of weird filtering effect. I’d have to hit the pad in the exact center to have anything that sounds remotely like a regular drum.I’d rather have the drums just respond to pressure sensitivity like any regular drummer would want them to do.

Why is this so hard? Any ideas? Thank you

For what it’s worth, Ruismaker works exactly like you would imagine it would. Except that you have to hit the button to make it a general midi (GM) kit and you have to lower the B to B flat for the fourth pad

BeatHawk in comparison seems like absolute insanity

  • I should also mention that I do not want to use any crazy settings on my Bop pad etc. I want to be able to switch all of my software components (sound generators) in and out easily

I found it was more effective to configure Bop Pad differently for the different apps, than the other way around.

In the default Bop Pad preset, radius sends CC1 (mod wheel), while in other presets radius sends CC2 and pressure sends CC1.

The acoustic drum kit in BeatHawk is not laid out like General MIDI. (It is a specialist, not a generalist?) You'll need to create a Bop Pad preset for it. Other kits like Drum Designer are more like GM.

General MIDI is a guideline, but every app is a little different. I wish Bop Pad presets had chosen 46 Open High Hat instead of 42, and 45 Low Tom instead of 47, but this would only help a little, if that.

@mojozart Thank you for the valuable information. The choice for open hi hat in particular is a head slapper. Do you have any presents you can share? Is there a way to change presets on the fly without a Windows or Mac box? And, By the way, the Bop pad application is not that intuitive either with regard to assigning presets.

Does anyone else have any other recommendations?

  • My recommendation is that you get to know the BopPad web application thing (and yes, you'll need a laptop for that). It's really not that bad once you get in there and understand what all the settings do.

Correction: I think the Acoustic Drum kit is more or less laid out like GM. The Bop Pad preset notes are all in the octave just below what is visible by default.

I think the the mod wheel being sent for radius is your biggest issue. Switching to Preset 3 (Sticks) should work: pressure is CC1 (mod wheel), radius sent as CC2 (?). Then it should be playable.

The other thing, of course, is to make sure BeatHawk is in pitch mode - this my biggest gripe with BH.

  • Everything you are saying is spot on including the critique of BeatHawk. Hard to believe that these deficiencies aren’t clearly obvious to the developers
