MacBook Pro connections

My work PC is knackered, partly due to constant power cuts we’re getting at the moment, so I’m chucking money at a new MacBook Pro 16” (have you won t’lottery Monzo!). Pricey, but they get excellent reviews, and I can’t risk a fried iMac with our electrickery, and I’m fed up with Windows.

Only downside is (as usual) connectivity - 4 USB-C/thunderbolt 3 ports. Since everything I use is USB 2, I’ll need a decent hub. I’d also like to connect my old HP monitor, so will need an adapter for that too.

Anyone had any success with adapters and hubs? Any recommendations greatly received!

  • 16" MBP here too. I use a Pluggable usb hub at the moment, works ok and let me connect the entire studio through one port on the MBP.

  • CalDigit TS3 Plus here. Let’s me “dock” with just a single cable.

  • Nice Catweazle reference.

I have been giving out Satechi gear where I work. We have had a couple of fails (pretty much out of the box s easy to return) but most of them have been ok. They look like an Apple product if that matters to you.

They do a range of different hubs/connectors.

  • I bought a Macbook 16” back in December and I really love it, it’s simply awesome.

I’m using a j5create Hub when I connect several devices and it’s working perfect. I’m also using Syntech USB C adapters when I just need to connect a single device.

    Something important:
You will find several USB Hubs advertised as “capable” of supplying power to a Macbook, but most of them were designed before this new Macbook model was launched and they can’t handle the power level a Macbook 16” requires. So, if you connect a power supply to one of those Hubs it will get very hot and most surely will be burnt out.
This new Macbook 16” uses a 96W Power Supply, so, if you want a USB C Hub capable of supplying power to the Macbook 16” you need to make sure it’s capable of at least 100W.

The Hub I have is capable of 60W only, so I connect the power supply directly to one of the Macbook ports, not to the Hub. I haven’t had any problem powering several MiDI controllers and audio interfaces simultaneously with this Hub, so I believe it’s not an issue, but just in case...

  • Does the 16” draw more power than the 15” then?

Yes, the Macbook Pro 15” uses an 87W power supply, compared to 96W of the Macbook Pro 16”

  • Thanks guys, I’ll check those out.

    Ah good info, thank you.

I'll order one of these today:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Adapter-Converting-Thunderbolt-MacBook-Devices/dp/B07CVX3516/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?keywords=Syntech+USB+C+to+USB+Adapter+(2+Pack),+Thunderbolt+3+to+USB+3.0+Adapter+Compatible+with+MacBook+Pro+2019+and+Before,+MacBook+Air+2019/2018,+Dell+XPS+and+More+Type+C+Devices,+Space+Grey&qid=1583745764&sr=8-2-fkmr0

So while I'm chewing over which hub to buy, I can still connect drives and stuff.

Just ordered the laptop - just the cheapest base model, but RAM and storage wise it'll be fine for work. Also saved £140 by getting it via Amazon.

  • Oh well, Amazon account hacked, laptop order cancelled. Still, I do have a bunch of adapters on the way I now have no use for.

Good to know, I was going to order one of these as well since my Pluggable one doesn't have any usb c ports.

Bummer. Have Amazon been any help, and presumably you haven't lost any money here?

Shouldn’t have, I cancelled the order as soon as I realised I was locked out, and order cancelled with the supplier. Just a pain as I may have to wait for a refund before my card can be used to purchase another.

Edit - just talking to the bank, Amazon took payment, but haven’t submitted the refund despite cancelling the order

Ok, I’m now stuck without a computer until Amazon decide to refund my cancelled order cash, which ten hours later they still haven’t done. And it could take a week, by which time I very much doubt there will be much available, courtesy of virus restrictions.

The order was stopped because of their lax security.

I will never, ever use Amazon again.

  • Sorry to hear that. Amazon have two-step security, it's probably worth enabling that there and everywhere else you can. There have been some big leaks, including a massive one from Adobe a few years ago, I've suffered a few hacking incidents and I'm sure it's from my Adobe login being leaked.

Yeah, that’s on now. The issue is they haven’t cancelled the payment, even though they, and the third-Party provider have confirmed the order cancellation.

    You should check on https://haveibeenpwned.com

My host ran a full check on my email accounts yesterday, no hacks, no unauthorised access, so the leak was entirely down to Amazon.
