music notation on iphone?
are there any music notation apps on iphone that are worth it? I’m learning to read music and would love to be able to write out some music on a staff and then either send midi directly to an instrument , or have the ability to export a midi file. is there anything like this?
Comments
Notion is universal although I’ve not used it on iPhone so can’t comment. The iPad version has midi export so I’m assuming the iPhone one does too.
Symphony pro for iPhone?
symphony pro? i don’t see it on the iphone. maybe it’s just ipad?
how do you like it on the ipad? is it quick to enter notes?
The Tunebooks app is a little geeky, but works well. You type the music in ABC notation, and it appears as you type. It has built-in General MIDI instruments, and can also transmit MIDI to accepting apps.

thanks... itunes store is so picky sometimes about spelling and Case sensitive. thanks for the link
so it looks like there are two versions. does this version have the option to upgrade to handwriting? or is it only possible to do that with the $14.99 version?
I'm not sure how you would do Handwriting on an iPhone. I have been mainly using the iPad version of the app since it's my main iOS device but the iPhone version can be used for getting quick ideas.
Another one is iWriteMusic. There is a SE (free) version to check it out.

I own Notion and Symphony...enough for me.
true, originally i was looking for iphone. but now i am trying to think globally and get the best bang for my buck, because i have an ipad at home that this could be cool on. thanks this helped a lot
which do you like between Notion or symphony ?
I quite like it after getting my head around it’s quirks - although to be fair I have nothing else to compare it to other than desktop software. Step entry via a midi controller is my preferred method of scoring. I find it faster than handwriting although handwriting is useful for quickly adding articulations, phrase markings, that sort of thing.
I'm not musician, not a pro or hardcore user...I use them mainly for import midi files, sometimes little arrangements or transposing...I get Symphony (for iphone) when it was free, but it's not universal, so I bought Notion as well because I found the instruments sound better (to my ears).
Sorry, but I can't help you about which is better for writing/composing in a serious way.
is handwriting a in app purchase or does it come with the $14.99 version?
It’s a reasonably priced IAP from memory. Ordinarily I’d say hold off, but given your goal of learning notation it might be worth picking up. Works reasonably well with my non-pencil iPad.
I have tried notion and symphony .. as good as they are they are a pain to navigate .. you will learn a lot more quicker on desktop .. Musescore is one example
Forenotation. is this spellcheck , i don’t see it in the app store
